Rutgers basketball is heading into the 2026-27 season with a rebuilt roster, but the early league read says the Scarlet Knights still have work to do.
In the unofficial Big Ten preseason poll conducted by The Columbus Dispatch, Rutgers was slotted 17th out of 18 teams. The 10th annual poll was released Monday morning ahead of the conference’s media day in Chicago this week, with NJ.com among the 28 beat writers who voted.
Rutgers’ best placement on any ballot was 13th, and the Scarlet Knights picked up five last-place votes. Penn State drew 22 last-place votes, while Northwestern received one.
It’s the second straight year Rutgers has been projected to finish second-to-last in the league. Last season, the Scarlet Knights outplayed that forecast by finishing 14th in the Big Ten standings, though they still posted their lowest conference win total since 2017-18, when they won three. This time around, the roster looks different again, but the expectations remain modest.
Rutgers brings back six players from last year’s team, including leading scorer Tariq Francis and senior guard Jamichael Davis. The program also added nine newcomers: five transfers, three international players and one true freshman.
The preseason recognition was limited, too. No Rutgers player landed on the Big Ten’s preseason first or second team.
There’s also uncertainty on the sideline. Head coach Steve Pikiell’s availability will be affected as he undergoes treatment for cancer, and associate head coach Brandin Knight will step in whenever Pikiell is away.
At the top of the poll, Purdue was picked first, followed by Michigan State, Michigan, UCLA, Nebraska, Purdue, USC, Ohio State, Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin, Maryland, Minnesota, Oregon, Washington, Northwestern, Rutgers and Penn State.

Greg Schiano Didnt Hold Back About Rutgers Biggest Problem
Rutgers came out of its loss to Indiana with plenty to sort through, and Greg Schiano did not try to soften the reality of it. The Scarlet Knights were beaten 47-15, and the head coach pointed directly to the teams running game as the area that fell short, making clear that the performance was well below the standard Rutgers wants to carry into the heart of the season.
The timing at least gives Rutgers a chance to reset during the bye week before the schedule picks back up against Maryland in Week 7 and Northwestern in Week 8. Schianos message was less about one bad afternoon than about what has to change quickly, because the next stretch will show whether the Scarlet Knights can turn a rough setback into something more constructive. Rutgers Just Got Pulled Into A Greg Schiano Debate Again
Rutgers Homecoming turned into another rough afternoon at SHI Stadium, with Indiana rolling to a 47-15 win while piling up 593 total yards. The Hoosiers have become one of the sports quickest turnarounds under Curt Cignetti, whose program has been lifted by outside support and already reached the top of the sport in just his second year.
For Rutgers, the result only sharpened the familiar questions around Greg Schiano, now in his seventh year back on the sideline and stuck at 1-4. Losses like this tend to do more than dent a record around here, because they revive the same debate the program keeps trying to move past, and this one is back in full view again. [Read more 🡒]
Rutgers Heads To Maryland With Pressure Rising On Both Sidelines
Rutgers is set for an early one at Maryland on Saturday, Oct. 17, with the Big Ten scheduling a 12:30 p.m. kickoff on the Big Ten Network. It lands at a tricky moment for the Scarlet Knights, who are 1-4 and still looking for their first win against a Power Four opponent this season.
The matchup also carries plenty of heat on the other sideline, where Maryland will be playing its seventh game in seven weeks and trying to stop a losing streak. With Greg Schiano and Mike Locksley both under pressure after recent struggles, this one already feels like more than a mid-October conference game for either program. [Read more 🡒]
