Rutgers Faces A Brutal Road Test With Its Win Streak On Line

Rutgers field hockey gears up for a challenging weekend as they face top-ranked Iowa and Northwestern, aiming to break records with potential historic upsets.

Rutgers is stepping into the kind of weekend that tells you exactly where a team stands. The Scarlet Knights hit the road for a pair of heavyweight matchups, opening Friday at No.

6 Iowa at 4 p.m. Eastern before moving on to No.

2 Northwestern on Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern.

Both games will be streamed on B1G+.

The stakes are clear. Beating Iowa would give RU its highest ranked win since 2024.

Taking down Northwestern would go even further, matching the highest ranked victory in program history - the 2021 Big Ten Tournament title game win over No. 2 Michigan.

Rutgers comes in at 9-6 overall and 3-6 in the league, riding a four-game winning streak that includes victories over American, Ohio State, No. 18 Michigan and Michigan State.

The Michigan win was especially notable, giving RU its second ranked victory of the season after earlier beating No. 12 Syracuse at home.

Anna Cogdell earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors after scoring twice against Michigan, including the game-winner in the final seconds of overtime. She joined Olivia Fraticelli, Lauren Iaccio and Eden Doucelin as Rutgers players to pick up weekly Big Ten awards this season.

Fraticelli has been a major piece of the Scarlet Knights’ attack, setting a new career-high with 12 goals this season. Her 23 career goals leave her tied with Guillermina Causarano for eighth on RU’s all-time list.

One more would move her into a tie with Linde van Schaik for seventh and match her for the most goals scored by a Rutgers player under head coach Meredith Civico. Two would tie Mary Beth Dwyer for sixth all-time.

Cogdell follows with seven goals, while Laura Loycke has six and Talia Schenck has four. Schenck and Frederique Vernooij are tied for the team lead with seven assists.

Iowa brings a 10-2 record into Friday’s meeting, with its only losses coming against Indiana and at Northwestern. The Hawkeyes have collected Big Ten wins over Indiana, Ohio State twice, Michigan and Michigan State, and they’ve outscored opponents 44-20 overall. Even so, 24 of those goals came in Iowa’s first four games.

The Hawkeyes are piling up offense at a dangerous rate. They lead the Big Ten in goals per game at 3.54, which ranks fifth nationally, and in scoring average at 3.39, good for eighth in the country.

Frerique van Cleef has 16 goals and leads the nation with 3.0 points per game, while also sitting second nationally at 1.23 goals per game. Dionne van Aalsum is right there too, ranking third nationally with 1.08 goals per game on 14 goals.

The series history leans Iowa’s way, 12-4-1, and Rutgers has had to earn every bit of success in Iowa City. The Scarlet Knights are 1-5 all-time there, with the lone win coming by 2-1 in 2016.

RU did win three straight in the series from 2016 through 2018 and again in 2024, and that latest victory came in dramatic fashion - a 3-2 decision in a penalty shootout. All four Rutgers wins over Iowa came against ranked Hawkeyes, including two against No.

7 Iowa.

Northwestern presents a different kind of challenge entirely. The Wildcats are 14-1 overall and 5-0 in the Big Ten, with a home game against No.

1 Maryland set to come before they face Rutgers. Northwestern was 22-1 last season and won the national championship, and since 2023 it is 33-1 against Big Ten opponents.

Defensively, the Wildcats have been suffocating. They lead the nation in save percentage at .859, rank third in goals-against-average at 0.66 and are also third in penalty corners at 9.13 per game. Goalkeeper Juliana Boon, who played with RU goalkeeper Emily Nicholls on Team USA this summer, leads the country with a 0.61 goals-against-average and .864 save percentage.

Northwestern has outscored opponents 50-10 and outshot them 287-126 this season. Ashley Sessa has 12 goals and nine assists, Ilse Tromp has 11 goals, and Olivia Bent-Cole has five goals and eight assists.

The all-time series favors Northwestern 13-5, and Rutgers has five wins over ranked Wildcats - four of them against top-five teams. Northwestern was ranked No. 3 twice and No. 4 twice in those Rutgers wins, which all came between 2018 and 2022.

The Wildcats have since won five straight in the matchup, and RU is 1-3 in Evanston. The Scarlet Knights’ last true road win over Northwestern came in 2018.

Rutgers returns home the following weekend for its final regular season game, hosting No. 13 Indiana on Friday, October 30 at 12 noon in the team’s Halloween game.

Rutgers Just Got A Needed Boost Before A Brutal Road Test

A sorely needed bit of stability arrived for Rutgers on Saturday with Dantae Chin back at left tackle, giving the Scarlet Knights a steadier edge up front after the offensive line had spent much of the season trying to settle itself. Chins presence matters even more with Northwestern next on the schedule, because the Wildcats bring a defense that can squeeze games and a rushing attack that tends to make every snap feel heavier than it should.

Rutgers also got some encouraging production elsewhere in the win over Maryland, with freshman wide receiver Dyzier Carter turning in a career-high six catches for 88 yards. And on a night when the defense had to keep answering, linebacker Sean Allison helped preserve the margin with a key coverage play late in the fourth quarter, the kind of stop that can loom large when the margin for error gets thin before a road trip like this one. Rutgers Faces A Bigger Question Than Just Beating Northwestern

Rutgers heads into Northwestern with a little momentum after upsetting Maryland, but the bigger challenge is figuring out whether that breakthrough can travel into one of the tougher road environments in the Big Ten. The Wildcats arrive ranked No. 24 and have been especially tough at home, which makes this matchup about more than just carrying over last weeks energy. It is also a chance for Rutgers to show that the upset was a step forward, not just a one-off spike.

Northwesterns success has come with balance and efficiency, with quarterback Aidan Chiles helping drive an offense that has been productive enough to keep opponents on alert. The scoring profiles for both teams have also made this a game to watch from a betting perspective, since each side has spent much of the season in higher-scoring territory. For Rutgers, the question is whether it can keep pace if this turns into the kind of game that asks a defense to make every stop count. [Read more 🡒]

Rutgers Fans Just Got More Context For The Michigan TV Spotlight

Week 6s college football TV and attendance numbers gave a wider view of how the sport was drawing eyeballs and butts in seats, and the Big Ten had its share of the spotlight. The biggest audiences came from the league and the SEC, while games involving schools like Indiana, Michigan and Oregon also stood out on the attendance side, reinforcing how much attention still follows the conferences marquee matchups.

For Rutgers fans, the broader look matters because it puts the weeks Maryland game in some context. The crowd figure in that matchup may have looked like the low point in the Big Ten, but the data suggests the picture was a little murkier than it first appeared, with other games around the country producing similarly thin turnouts and some attendance reports not exactly lining up cleanly.
