Rutgers' Late Rally Falls Short Against Michigan
In a spirited showdown at Bainton Field, Rutgers baseball faced a tough 11-5 defeat against Michigan on Saturday. The Scarlet Knights, now at 15-11 overall and 4-4 in conference play, found themselves in a deep hole early on, trailing 7-0. Despite a valiant effort to claw back, the Wolverines, who stand at 13-13 and 2-6 in the Big Ten, held firm to force a decisive rubber match on Sunday.
Michigan came out swinging, posting three runs in the first inning and adding four more in the third, setting the tone with a commanding lead. Rutgers showed resilience, though, with Chase Krewson driving in a run with an RBI single, and Charlie Meglio igniting hope with a three-run homer, narrowing the gap to 7-4.
However, the Scarlet Knights couldn't capitalize on their momentum. Key opportunities slipped away as they left runners stranded in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, unable to close the gap any further.
Michigan padded their lead with a solo homer in the eighth and a three-run shot in the ninth, extending their advantage to 11-4. Jack Sweeney provided a late spark for Rutgers with a pinch-hit solo homer in the ninth, but it wasn't enough to turn the tide, as the game concluded at 11-5.
The stage is now set for an exciting series finale at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Bainton Field, where both teams will look to clinch the series.
