Rutgers’ offensive line is starting to come into focus, and the first thing that jumps out is the experience. There are still question marks in the mix, but the Scarlet Knights are getting back two familiar names in Needham and Asamoah, and that matters.
Training camp is also where the quarterback battle is unfolding, so the work up front is being sorted out at the same time. This week, Big Ten Network’s Dave Revsine posted video that offered a look at how Rutgers’ line is lining up.
Needham’s return gives Rutgers a veteran presence on the edge, and his path has been anything but straightforward. He shifted to the left side last season after the Scarlet Knights were hit with multiple injuries, then started nine games at left tackle and one game at right rackle.
Before that, in 2024, he opened nine games at right tackle before a knee injury ended that run. His career has also been interrupted before that: in 2023, he was set to be the right tackle until a season-ending injury against Temple in Week 2 stopped those plans.
Asamoah brings the kind of stability every offensive line wants. Over the last two seasons, he has started all 25 games at right guard.
His role was already growing before that, too. In 2023, as a sophomore, he played in all 12 games at the position and made five starts.
He also had three starts as a true freshman.
Rutgers’ front five has come a long way since Greg Schiano returned to Piscataway. What used to be a weakness has become a strength, and with a new quarterback on the way, that group up front will need to hold its line again.
