Detroit Lions Sign Two Former Scarlet Knights in Free Agency Shake-Up

Former Rutgers stars find new homes in the NFL as the Detroit Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers bolster their rosters with key signings.

As NFL free agency kicks off, three former Scarlet Knights are on the move, with two finding new homes in Detroit. The Lions have become a popular destination for Rutgers alumni, as both running back Isiah Pacheco and safety Christian Izien have inked deals with the team.

Isiah Pacheco and Christian Izien Join the Detroit Lions

Pacheco's arrival in Detroit likely fills the gap left by David Montgomery, who was traded to Houston. With Jahmyr Gibbs already established as the Lions' star rusher, Pacheco may not see the lion's share of carries but could play a crucial role as a backup. Given that Detroit ranked 21st in rush attempts per game last season, there's room for offensive adjustments that might allow both Gibbs and Pacheco to shine.

Meanwhile, Izien brings his solid safety skills to a Lions defense that struggled against the pass last season. With 45 games under his belt with Tampa Bay, Izien has proven his mettle with 165 tackles, eight tackles for loss, five pass break-ups, and three interceptions. His presence could be pivotal as Detroit looks to bolster its secondary.

Both players have signed one-year contracts, giving them a chance to prove their worth in the Motor City.

Sebastian Joseph-Day Heads to Pittsburgh

Over in Pittsburgh, the Steelers have signed defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day, a seasoned veteran with seven years in the league. Known for his run-stopping prowess, Joseph-Day brings 314 total tackles, 15.5 sacks, and a Super Bowl ring from his time with the Rams. His experience will be invaluable in a division known for its heavy reliance on the run game, particularly with the challenge of facing Derrick Henry twice a year.

These moves highlight the ongoing influence of Rutgers alumni in the NFL, as they continue to make their mark across the league.
