Purdues Big Ten Surge Is Suddenly Paying Off In Indiana

After two impressive Big Ten victories, Purdue lands promising in-state linebacker Wesley Summersett, hinting at a bright recruiting future.

Purdue’s recent surge on the field is starting to show up on the recruiting trail.

Fresh off back-to-back Big Ten wins over Illinois and Minnesota, the Boilermakers picked up a commitment Monday from 2027 linebacker Wesley Summersett, a Berne, Ind., product who had been pledged to Bowling Green. Summersett made the announcement himself on X, saying, "After a lot of thought and consideration, I have decided to flip my commitment from Bowling Green State University to Purdue University," followed by, "I am grateful for the opportunity to play at the next level.

Thank you to everyone who has helped me get to this point. Boiler Up!"

Purdue defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Kevin Kane handled Summersett’s recruitment. The South Adams High School standout originally chose Bowling Green in June, then visited Purdue on Sept. 12 when the Boilermakers hosted Wake Forest.

Summersett’s list of other offers included Louisville, Miami (Ohio), Colgate and Dartmouth.

At 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, Summersett has done plenty of damage on both sides of the ball at South Adams. As a junior in the 2025 season, he piled up 1,562 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns while also posting 65 tackles, six tackles for loss, an interception and three forced fumbles on defense.

South Adams went 10-4 last season and reached the semi-state round of the IHSAA State Football Tournament. The Starfires are 6-2 this year and have one regular-season game left.

247Sports lists Summersett without a star rating or ranking. He is the 17th player to commit to Purdue in the 2027 class and the fifth in-state pledge for Barry Odom and his staff.

That kind of momentum matters for a program trying to build both in the high school ranks and through the transfer portal. Purdue opened the season 1-3, but the wins over Illinois and Minnesota pushed the Boilermakers to 3-3 and may be the kind of on-field proof recruits are looking for.

Since arriving in December 2024, Odom has been clear about wanting Purdue to put a premium on high school recruiting, with a foundation built around prep talent and retention. The Boilermakers would still like to pair that approach with additions from the portal.

Summersett was Purdue’s second in-season 2026 addition. The other was three-star Center Grove quarterback Oscar Sloan, a member of the 2028 class.

If Purdue keeps stacking wins, more commitments could follow. For now, the Boilermakers have another in-state piece for the future - and another sign that the buzz in West Lafayette is starting to spill into recruiting.

Purdue Just Backed Up Its Big Ten Surge In A Huge Way

Purdue kept its Big Ten surge rolling at Ross-Ade Stadium with a 41-13 win over Minnesota, and the result gave Barry Odom plenty to like about the way his team is starting to look on both sides of the ball. The Boilermakers controlled the line of scrimmage on offense, the defense made Minnesota uncomfortable, and Odom pointed to the way Purdue played across all three phases as a sign the program is beginning to stack complete performances.

The biggest individual spark came from Fame Ijeboi, whose night turned into one of the best performances in Purdue football history and gave the Boilermakers a featured weapon they could lean on throughout the game. After back-to-back conference wins, Purdue now has a little more legitimacy behind this run, even if the wider question is whether this level of balance and physicality can hold up once the schedule tightens again. Purdue Defense Faces A Personal Friday Test Against A Familiar Mind

Friday brings a familiar chess match to Purdues sideline, with Kevin Kane preparing his defense for Washington and the challenge of facing Ryan Walters, a former colleague who now runs the Huskies defense under Jedd Fisch. Their paths have been tied together before, both at Illinois and again at Purdue, and this meeting adds a personal layer to what is already a meaningful test for Barry Odoms staff.

Kane has been open about the respect he has for Walters, and the matchup carries a little extra edge because of how much Walters helped shape his own approach. Purdue will be looking to sort out an opposing defense directed by someone who knows the mindset and language of the men on the other sideline, which makes the preparation as interesting as the game itself. Purdue Volleyball Just Delivered The Response Boilermakers Fans Needed

Purdue needed a steadier night in Big Ten play, and it got one in a hard-fought five-set win over Illinois that felt more like a reset than a routine victory. After three straight losses to ranked opponents, the Boilermakers found a way to hang around, get production from the middle and the pins, and leave with a result that mattered for both their record and their confidence.

Grace Heaney turned in a balanced effort with 16 kills and 17 digs, while Dior Charles again gave Purdue a presence at the net with 13 kills and eight blocks. The match tightened late as the Boilermakers had to dig out of a fourth-set hole before closing the night in the fifth, a response that should resonate with a team trying to stabilize at 3-3 in conference play.
