In a thrilling NCAA Tournament Round of 32 clash, Purdue showcased their resilience and depth, overcoming Miami 79-69 to secure their third consecutive Sweet Sixteen berth. Despite a challenging outing from star point guard Braden Smith, who recently set the Division 1 men’s basketball record for career assists, the Boilermakers found their groove thanks to standout performances from Fletcher Loyer and Trey Kaufman-Renn.
Loyer and Kaufman-Renn were nothing short of spectacular, combining for 43 points on an efficient 14-of-23 shooting. Loyer was particularly lethal, dropping 24 points while shooting 6-of-7 from the field, including a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc and a flawless 8-of-8 from the free-throw line. His sharpshooting was instrumental in keeping Purdue ahead during critical moments.
Kaufman-Renn added 19 points and dominated the boards with nine rebounds, further solidifying Purdue’s presence in the paint. His physicality and scoring touch provided the Boilermakers with a crucial edge in a tightly contested matchup.
Smith, despite his struggles, managed to contribute with eight assists, though he also turned the ball over eight times. His scoring touch was off, hitting just 3-of-12 from the field, but he was perfect from the charity stripe, going 4-for-4.
The game was a nail-biter, with Purdue trailing 40-38 at halftime. However, the Boilermakers found their rhythm in the second half, eventually stretching their lead to double digits. A pivotal layup by Smith extended the lead to 68-57 with just over five minutes left, setting the stage for Purdue to seal the victory from the free-throw line, where they excelled, hitting 21-of-22 attempts.
C.J. Cox also made a notable contribution with 11 points in just 18 minutes before exiting due to a knee injury. His early scoring helped Purdue maintain pace with Miami, who were led by Shelton Henderson’s 18 points and eight rebounds.
With this win, Purdue advances to face 11th-seeded Texas in San Jose, while Miami’s season concludes with a commendable 26-9 record. As Purdue looks ahead to the Sweet Sixteen, their balanced attack and clutch performances make them a formidable contender in the tournament's next stages.
