Purdue’s 2026 football season opens Friday night at Ross-Ade Stadium, and the Boilermakers get a familiar first test in Indiana State.
It’s the second year for head coach Barry Odom, whose Purdue team went 2-10 last season. This time around, the Boilermakers are bringing back their starting quarterback in Ryan Browne, while the offense gets a new look around him with a rebuilt offensive line and backfield. Purdue also expects key playmakers back in the mix, with tight end George Burhenn and receivers De'Nylon Morrissette and Chauncey Magwood returning after missing most or all of last season with injuries.
On defense, Purdue has some important holdovers as well. Linebacker Charles Correa, cornerback Hudauri Hines and defensive tackle Ian Jeffries are back as returning starters, and Kevin Kane is back in charge of the defense after serving as Purdue’s defensive coordinator in 2023 and '24 and spending last season at Minnesota.
Indiana State arrives after a 23-21 loss to Southeast Missouri State in its season opener. The Sycamores have never beaten Purdue, dropping all six previous meetings, including a 49-0 loss in the 2024 season opener.
The matchup gives Purdue a chance to show real progress in Odom’s second season, and there’s a clear expectation that the Boilermakers should control things from the start. Indiana State did throw the ball effectively against SEMO, but the Sycamores had major trouble running it and protecting the quarterback. Purdue’s defense is set to play with an attack mentality, and that could make life difficult for the visitors.
The bigger question may not be whether Purdue wins, but how quickly the depth chart starts to matter. If the Boilermakers’ backups aren’t closing this one out, that would say plenty. Purdue needs this game to do more than just land in the win column; it needs live reps, production across the roster and a box score that reflects a team ready to take a step forward after eight months of preparation.
