Kevin Savage Jr. is headed to Purdue, and the Boilermakers landed one of the top guards in the 2027 class in the process.
The No. 36 overall recruit and a 5-foot-11 point guard from Marietta (Ga.) Wheeler told 247Sports he has committed to Purdue, choosing the Boilermakers over UCLA, Georgia Tech, Georgia, Auburn and Florida State.
For Savage, the fit came down to the way Purdue plays and the way it develops its guards.
"Really just the system," Savage said when asked why he picked the Boilermakers. "I've had a good relationship with the coaching staff since my freshman year of high school. When I visited, I liked what I saw - the practices, the player development, and how they use their point guards."
Purdue’s opening at point guard became even more noticeable after Braden Smith left as one of the greatest players in program history, and Savage is eager to step into that kind of role.
Matt Painter’s work with Smith was a major selling point, along with the consistency Painter has given Purdue in a college basketball world that keeps changing.
"I like how he developed Braden Smith from his freshman year to his senior year, and Coach Painter's stability," Savage said. "It feels like he's staying at Purdue.
He's not tempted to leave. The stability and the trust he puts in his point guards stood out to me."
Painter has turned Purdue into one of the nation’s premier programs, and Savage said he sees himself fitting right into that environment as a leader who can set the tone on both ends.
"I'm a true competitor who wants to win - a floor general, a dog on defense," Savage said of what he brings to the program. "The goal is to bring a National Championship to Mackey Arena."
