Purdue Faces Miami's Top Scorers Again-What Will Happen This Time?

Purdue seeks to leverage its familiarity with Miami's top talent in a highly anticipated second-round showdown.

As Purdue gears up to face Miami in the West Region's second-round clash on Sunday in St. Louis, they may not have a complete picture of the Hurricanes' playbook, but they certainly know the talents of Miami's top scorers.

Malik Reneau, a towering 6-foot-9 senior, has been a revelation since transferring to Miami. After averaging 13.1 points and 5.6 rebounds at Indiana, Reneau has elevated his game this season, putting up 19.0 points and 6.6 rebounds on average. His recent 24-point performance against Missouri was a testament to his growth.

Joining him is Tre Donaldson, a dynamic 6-2 combo guard who has found his stride with career-high averages of 16.5 points and 5.8 assists. Donaldson was pivotal in Miami's victory over Missouri, scoring 22 points and nailing clutch threes when it mattered most.

Purdue's point guard Braden Smith acknowledges the advantage of having faced Reneau and Donaldson before. "It definitely helps," Smith noted. "You gotta be ready to just bounce back quickly."

Both teams are adjusting to a rapid turnaround after their Friday night victories. Miami, in particular, wrapped up their game late, quieting a fervent Missouri crowd.

Yet, the Hurricanes (26-8) have been defying odds all season. Under first-year coach Jai Lucas, they've set a new school record for wins by a rookie coach, blending veteran savvy with youthful energy.

Their resilience was on full display Friday night. Trailing Missouri 54-52 with under eight minutes left, Lucas called a timeout. Miami responded with an 11-0 run, sparked by Reneau and freshman Shelton Henderson, sealing the win.

"Just stay the course and continue to just keep pushing and pushing," Donaldson emphasized. "Don't change nothing. Attack it the same way we have been all year."

While Miami is riding a wave of unexpected success, Purdue (28-8) is navigating the weight of high expectations. The Boilermakers, national finalists in 2024, were early favorites in preseason polls. Despite a dip that saw them seeded seventh in the Big Ten tournament, they've rediscovered their form, capturing the conference title and cruising past Queens with a 104-71 triumph.

Braden Smith was instrumental in that win, scoring 26 points and breaking Bobby Hurley's long-standing NCAA assist record with 1,083 career assists. Purdue coach Matt Painter praised Smith's ability to balance scoring with playmaking.

"We let his instincts take over," Painter said. "He took the shots that were there."

The victor of this matchup will move on to face either Gonzaga or Texas in the semifinals.
