Joel Klatt’s latest college football rankings came with a jolt: when he laid out his top 10 players for 2026, his No. 1 quarterback wasn’t Arch Manning, Dante Moore or Julian Sayin. It was Notre Dame’s C.J. Carr.
That call stands out immediately because Carr is coming off just one season as a starter, but it was a productive one. As a freshman in 2025, he threw for 2,741 yards and 24 touchdowns, then helped push Notre Dame to the brink of a College Football Playoff spot before the Irish finished one place short of the field.
Klatt didn’t hide how much he likes the group of quarterbacks near the top of the sport. "I love Dante Moore," he said.
"I really like Julian Sayin. I really like Arch Manning.
But guys, I cannot contain my excitement for C.J. Carr at Notre Dame, so C.J.
Carr is number three."
He also pointed to what he sees as a shift coming for Notre Dame’s offense in 2026. Klatt described last year’s unit as "run-based" and said, "What people failed to reealize is how explosive they were and they can be this year offensively throwing the football."
"This is an offense that is going to be more quarterback-centric than it was... a year ago," said Klatt. "Carr could have a monster year."
Still, the choice is tough to defend on the numbers alone. Carr ranked 51st nationally in passing yards last season.
Sayin threw for nearly 1,000 more yards, while Manning, even in a rough season, finished with 3,163 passing yards and 26 touchdowns. Moore may have the strongest upside of the group and already has 3,565 yards and 30 touchdowns on his résumé.
Notre Dame’s roster turnover adds another layer to the debate. The Irish lost Jeremiyah Love, their most notable skill-position name, and backup running back Jadarian Price is also gone. On top of that, Notre Dame returns only one player who had a double-digit reception total in 2025.
Klatt’s list leaned heavily toward Notre Dame overall. He put Irish cornerback Leonard Moore at No. 2 nationally, behind only Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith.
Notre Dame came close to a national title in 2024 before losing to Ohio State in the CFP final, but the program has not won the sport’s biggest prize since 1988. If Klatt’s read is right and the Irish really do have the country’s top quarterback and top defender, that kind of talent should show up fast.
