Purdue’s Friday-night opener against Indiana State comes with no shortage of confidence from the staff picking the game, and for good reason. Across the board, the Boilermakers are expected to handle business against a Sycamores team that already opened its season with a home loss to Southeast Missouri State, an FCS opponent that went 4-8 a year ago.
The historical edge is as lopsided as the matchup itself. This will be the eighth meeting between Purdue and Indiana State, and Purdue has won all seven previous games.
The closest one came in 2013, when Purdue edged Indiana State 20-14. The last two meetings, in 2024 and 2022, ended in a combined 105-0 in Purdue’s favor, and the average margin across the seven games is just over 32 points.
With the spread sitting around 36 points, that lines up with the pattern.
The predictions reflect that gap. One staff pick called it plainly: “This is a game that Purdue has to win, should win, and will win.”
Another said, “This shouldn’t be close.” The projected scores lean heavily toward the Boilermakers, with picks ranging from Purdue 44-12 to Purdue 56-7.
Other forecasts included Purdue 45-6, Purdue 45-10, Purdue 45-7, Purdue 49-7, and Purdue 45-7.
There’s also a clear expectation that Purdue should look the part early under Barry Odom. One prediction pointed to a big first half and a chance for younger players to get on the field later.
Another described the opener as a chance for Odom to “make a statement” and send the crowd home happy on Friday night. The broader view is that Purdue is better at every position and should control the game from the start.
The matchup is also being used as an early measuring stick for what Purdue is building in year two under Odom. One staff member said the program has been sold as improved in every area, while also noting Odom’s concerns about the support he inherited. The same prediction stressed that Odom has already proven himself at Missouri and UNLV, and that the real question is whether Purdue gives him the backing he needs to succeed.
On offense, there’s optimism around the pieces around Browne, along with a run game led by Fame Ijeboi, Jerrick Gibson, Antonio Harris, and freshman Izaiah Wright. Fame is expected to get the first shot as the primary back, and one pick called him likely the best Purdue running back since Tyrone Tracy, Jr. The offensive line was also singled out as an area that finally looks better than it has in years.
Defensively, Charles Correa was identified as a standout at linebacker, with the secondary expected to limit explosive plays. The biggest question is up front, where Purdue will be looking for players like CJ Madden and others to generate pressure and disrupt plays behind the line of scrimmage.
Even with all of that optimism, there was one caution flag: beating up on an FCS opponent won’t necessarily prove much beyond avoiding disaster. One prediction said Purdue should “take the bought victory, get back into the swing of playing weekly games, and start prepping for Wake Forest.” Another added that while Purdue should win comfortably, covering a 36.5-point spread is a tougher ask, though the over of 56.5 points looked appealing.
Still, the message from the staff was consistent. Purdue should win, and win big.
