Yang Hansen Still Has One Big Hurdle In Portlands Rotation

Despite his full health and potential, Yang Hansen's role with the Portland Trail Blazers for the 2026-27 NBA season remains uncertain as competition intensifies.

Portland Trail Blazers center Yang Hansen may be healthy, but that does not mean his minutes are about to grow.

The 21-year-old big man is still fighting to carve out a real place in the rotation, and a report shared by HoopsHype says he could remain in a limited role heading into the 2026-27 campaign. Portland already has Donovan Clingan in the frontcourt, so the path to consistent center minutes is crowded.

Hansen entered the league with plenty of promise after going 16th overall in the 2025 NBA Draft, but his rookie season did not give him much room to settle in. He played in 43 games, averaged 2.2 points and 1.5 rebounds, and logged just seven minutes per appearance.

That lack of steady opportunity has left his role very much up in the air. The Blazers still need to see more before handing him a bigger slice of the rotation, and he has to prove he can contribute on a consistent basis.

There was at least one small flash of what he can offer during Portland’s preseason win over the Golden State Warriors on October 7. Hansen played 12 minutes, scored six points, and did all of his damage in the fourth quarter after spending the first three periods on the bench.

It was a reminder that the tools are there. His size and passing ability give him a real foundation to build on, but preseason moments only go so far.

For now, Hansen remains more of a developing prospect than a locked-in contributor. Staying healthy matters, but so does showing enough to force his way into the Blazers’ plans.
