Jeremy Sochan Just Put One Blazers Role Into Focus

Jeremy Sochan's promising preseason with the Blazers rekindles talk of Nic Batum-like potential as he showcases improved shooting alongside his defensive prowess.

Jeremy Sochan’s preseason debut for the Portland Trail Blazers offered a small but eye-catching reminder of why his name has long been linked with Nicolas Batum.

The comparison has always lived in the upside. Sochan has the defensive versatility and playmaking to make that kind of leap, but the missing piece has been a dependable jumper. That’s been the roadblock, and it’s the reason he hasn’t fully closed the gap.

On this night, though, Sochan flashed something that looked a lot closer to progress. In just nine minutes, he scored 10 points and went 4-of-6 from the field.

The most notable part: he knocked down two corner threes, both with confidence and both clean looks that splashed through. It was only one preseason game, but it was enough to get people looking again.

Sochan, 23, entered the NBA as the No. 9 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. At 6'8" and 230 pounds with a 7'0" wingspan and plus athleticism, he came into the league with obvious intrigue. A lot of that promise has already shown up on defense, where he’s become one of the most versatile players in the league.

In 2024-25, Sochan ranked in the 99th percentile in defensive positional versatility, the 98th percentile in matchup difficulty, and the 96th percentile in perimeter isolation defense, according to Basketball Index. He posted those numbers while playing 25.3 minutes per game and added a balanced stat line of 11.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.4 offensive boards, and 2.4 assists while shooting 53.5 percent from the field.

The problem has been the perimeter shot. Sochan’s career numbers from deep sit at 0.6 made threes per game on 26.6 percent shooting, and in 2024-25 he hit just 30.8 percent from beyond the arc. That’s part of why the Spurs moved toward wings who could space the floor better, including Julian Champagnie and Devin Vassell.

Still, Sochan is only 23, and the rest of his game remains appealing. He’s a high-level defender, a strong offensive rebounder, and a capable passer. If the jumper really is starting to come around, Portland could have a real rotation piece on its hands - and maybe even the kind of Batum-like fit that once made Sochan such a tempting prospect.

Yang Hansen Still Has One Big Hurdle In Portlands Rotation

Yang Hansens first year with the Trail Blazers left him still searching for a foothold in the rotation, a familiar place for a young big man trying to earn trust in the frontcourt. The 16th overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft flashed enough promise to stay on the radar, but his role heading into the 2026-27 season is still very much unsettled as Portland sorts through its depth inside.

A recent preseason outing offered another small step without changing the larger picture, and that is where the intrigue sits for the Blazers. Hansens development will matter, but so will the competition for minutes around him, and Portlands willingness to carve out a real role for him may depend on how quickly he can separate himself in a crowded front line.
