With Jazz guard Keyonte George sidelined due to a hamstring strain, his hopes for clinching this year’s Most Improved Player award are fading fast. The award mandates a minimum of 65 game appearances, and George, sitting at 54, faces an uphill battle. One of those games won't even count since he played under 15 minutes.
To stay in the running, George would need to hit the court next Saturday and compete in Utah’s last 12 games-a scenario that seems improbable. As highlighted by Kevin Reynolds, head coach Will Hardy has emphasized prioritizing George’s long-term health over award eligibility.
“I would like to get Keyonte 65,” Hardy stated earlier this month. “But I think Keyonte understands we’re focusing on his health first.
That’s always our approach.”
Despite the setback, George has made significant strides this season, achieving career highs in points (23.6), assists (6.1), and steals (1.1) per game, alongside impressive shooting percentages. He’ll be eligible for a rookie scale extension come July.
Switching gears to the Northwest, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has shattered Wilt Chamberlain’s NBA record for consecutive games scoring at least 20 points. With 127 straight games under his belt, Gilgeous-Alexander has become the league’s most consistent scorer, a streak dating back to October 2024.
Meanwhile, Nuggets forward Cameron Johnson is navigating an inconsistent first year in Denver. With the regular season winding down, Johnson admits he’s still finding his groove.
Head coach David Adelman encourages him to focus on making the right play rather than the perfect one. Johnson, who’s shown flashes of brilliance with consecutive 15-point games, will be extension-eligible this summer.
In Portland, NBA commissioner Adam Silver expressed optimism about securing public funding for renovations to the Trail Blazers’ Moda Center. Highlighting the arena’s multifaceted use, Silver underscored its importance to the community, not just for sports but for a variety of events. The effort has gained bipartisan support, reflecting the arena’s role as a vital community hub.
