Blazers Owner Just Raised The Stakes For Portlands New Era

Tom Dundon pledges to build on the Trail Blazers' recent success, promising fans an electrifying season with aspirations of championship glory.

Trail Blazers owner Tom Dundon isn’t tiptoeing around the conversation with Portland fans. He wants the city to know exactly where he’s aiming.

In a letter to season ticket holders on Tuesday night, Dundon said his goal is to bring a championship to Portland.

“I don’t believe in making promises I can’t back up,” Dundon wrote in the letter, which was obtained by The Oregonian/OregonLive. “My track record speaks for itself, and my intention here is clear: bring a championship to Portland.”

The message arrived with the Blazers coming off a 42-win season and a return to the playoffs, a base Dundon pointed to as the starting point for a team entering its first season under coach Micah Nori.

“The expectation is straightforward: compete every night and take another step forward,” he wrote. “No shortcuts.”

Dundon’s letter also leaned into the roster’s momentum. He highlighted Deni Avdija’s first All-Star selection and the playoff reps gained by Donovan Clingan, Toumani Camara, Shaedon Sharpe and Scoot Henderson. He said the offseason addition of two-time All-Star Ja Morant gives Portland another reason to play faster.

He also noted the retention of Robert Williams III and the veteran presence of Jrue Holiday. And he made sure to mention Damian Lillard, whose return to the court at Moda Center is looming.

“His connection to this building and this city doesn’t need much explanation,” Dundon wrote of Lillard. “Neither will the reaction when he hits that first logo three back at Moda.”

On the building itself, Dundon didn’t lay out any concrete arena upgrades. He said only that the organization is working to keep Moda Center among the NBA’s best venues.

“There’s work ahead, and we’ll keep pushing until we get there,” he wrote.

The Blazers open the regular season Oct. 21 against Phoenix at Moda Center.

New-Look Blazers Finally Give Fans A First Real Look

The preseason opener at Moda Center gives Portland its first live look at a roster that has been reshaped enough to feel familiar and foreign at the same time. Against the Warriors, the Trail Blazers begin a schedule that is less about the result than about learning how the pieces fit, and head coach Micah Nori has already signaled that this month will be used to test lineups while sharpening the basics, especially defensive rebounding and taking care of the ball.

The biggest draw is the new backcourt and the way it changes everything around it, with Ja Morant and Damian Lillard now part of the same Blazers picture for the first time. Portland also has other newcomers working into the rotation, so the early exhibitions should offer at least a glimpse of how the offense and defense might look once Nori settles on combinations and the team gets past the first wave of experimentation. Blazers Fans Already Have A New Ownership Controversy To Process

Tom Dundons first months as the Trail Blazers owner already have had plenty going on, with the franchise trying to settle a new direction around Ja Morant, new head coach Micah Nori and a young core that includes Deni Avdija. So when he sent a letter to season ticket holders meant to reassure them about the teams commitment to Portland, it was always going to draw attention beyond the usual routine ownership message.

The problem is the letter itself has now become part of the conversation, not just its intent. Fans who were supposed to be hearing a steadying note about the future are instead parsing how the message was put together, and for a team trying to project stability after a flurry of major basketball changes, that is not the kind of side story anyone in the building wanted to add to the pile. Scoot Henderson Suddenly Faces A Blazers Question Fans Cant Ignore

Scoot Hendersons place in Portland has become one of the more interesting questions on the roster as the offseason approaches. The 2025-26 season showed signs of real progress, but the path to a bigger role is not exactly wide open with Damian Lillard, Ja Morant and Jrue Holiday all crowding the backcourt picture.

For the Trail Blazers, that makes Henderson more than just a young guard trying to take the next step. League chatter has already brought trade interest his way, yet Portland has made it clear it still sees him as part of its future, which only raises the stakes around how the next phase of his development gets handled.
