Micah Nori is about to take on the biggest assignment of his coaching life, and the Trail Blazers are betting his years of bouncing around the league have prepared him for it.

Portland hired Nori in June on a one-year deal to become the team’s main play-caller, a move that came after five seasons as an assistant with the Minnesota Timberwolves. The contract was reported to come with a below-market base salary, and it drew plenty of criticism as another sign of the frugal approach from Tom Dundon, who took over the team in March. Nori still accepted the chance.
The 52-year-old will be a new face for many Blazers fans when the season opens, but Portland offered a little window into who he is in a video posted on X. Asked to share a fact about his life, Nori gave one that stands out immediately.
“I've lived in all four time zones,” said Nori.
That kind of path fits his career. Nori began in 2009 as a scout for the Toronto Raptors, later moving up to assistant coach. He also spent time with the Sacramento Kings, the Denver Nuggets, and the Detroit Pistons.
Born in Middletown, Ohio and a college player at Indiana University, Nori brings a long list of stops and experiences into a Portland job that now asks him to guide a roster with plenty of support. Damian Lillard and Jrue Holiday headline the veteran leadership, while the Blazers also have Ja Morant, Deni Avdija, Shaedon Sharpe, Donovan Clingan, Toumani Camara, and Scoot Henderson in the rotation.
Portland’s last season already showed the group can surprise. The Trail Blazers finished seventh in the Western Conference.
