That was the logic behind the surprising trade for Ja Morant, a move that drew immediate skepticism because the roster fit looked awkward on paper. Portland’s new owner, Tom Dundon, and the front office decided the price made sense anyway.
Morant, a two-time All-Star who is 26 and still supposed to be in his prime, has spent years away from that elite level because of injury. If the change of scenery gets him back there, Portland lands a franchise-altering bargain.

Sochan comes with a similar set of concerns: he does not space the floor, which is a real issue for a Portland offense that badly needed more shooting this summer. He is also not the same high-level two-way presence he was early in his career with the San Antonio Spurs, with his offensive limitations playing a major role in that decline.
Still, the Blazers are willing to look past the red flags. Sochan is only 23, a former top-ten pick, and Portland believes there is value in giving him a place where his strengths can matter. That includes the kind of defensive identity the Blazers want back, along with another forward who can help with depth at the position.
The larger picture has stayed consistent all offseason, even if the roster itself looks clunky. Portland does not believe it is close to the Oklahoma City Thunder or San Antonio Spurs, so it is playing the long game and stockpiling pieces it thinks can be useful later.
Sochan fits that approach because he has always been the kind of player who needs the right environment. He brings rebounding and defensive versatility, and Portland is betting those traits can shine if he lands in a spot built to maximize them. If not, the Blazers can move on without damaging the rebuild, the same way they would if the Morant gamble falls flat.
