As training camp nears for the Pittsburgh Steelers, the roster still feels like a work in progress. Injuries can change everything fast, and while plenty of players are still fighting for jobs, there are a handful who are already too important to lose.
If Pittsburgh wants any real shot at competing this season, these are the names it can least afford to have sidelined. The group includes veterans, rising young players, and even a kicker who has become one of the team’s most dependable weapons.
At the top of the list is Aaron Rodgers. Nothing would hit the Steelers harder right away than losing the veteran quarterback.
He’s set to start after an uneven season last year, and the hope is that another run with Mike McCarthy helps him get back to playoff success. Pittsburgh cannot afford a repeat of the kind of season Rodgers had with the New York Jets, where he lasted through training camp only to suffer a season-ending injury early in his first regular-season game.
The quarterbacks behind him are not built to carry the load, and if Rodgers were to miss more than a game or two, the season would be lost.
Cam Heyward remains just as central on the other side of the ball. He has been the heart and soul of the Steelers for a decade, and there’s no sign he’s slowing down.
The team is hoping younger defensive linemen like Derrick Harmon and or Keeanu Benton will take on bigger roles soon, but for now Heyward is still the clear leader in the locker room and one of the NFL’s best defensive tackles despite his age. Losing him would hurt the defensive front, and it would create a leadership void the team doesn’t have an obvious answer for yet.
Joey Porter Jr. is another player Pittsburgh can’t afford to lose, even if training camp brings some tension. He is still waiting on a contract extension, and that deal is expected to come at a premium.
The Steelers are clearly betting on his upside, and despite some penalty concerns, he has shown enough promise to remain their top cornerback. If negotiations drag on, a potential "hold-in" could become a real distraction.
And if Porter Jr. misses time because of contract issues or injury, that would be a major problem for the defense.
DK Metcalf also looms large. After he was suspended late last season, the offense looked stagnant and short on reliable wide receiver production.
He enters camp as the Steelers’ top target at the position, even with several new additions around him. Michael Pittman Jr. and Germie Bernard should help cover for any absence, but Metcalf still gives the offense something it badly needs: speed and YAC ability.
Without that, the Steelers lose one of their best chances to create explosive plays.
Then there’s Chris Boswell, the boldest name on the list and maybe the hardest one to dispute. Kicker usually isn’t the first position anyone thinks of when talking about must-have players, but Boswell has earned that spot.
Over the past five years or so, he has been the team’s most reliable point scorer, and Pittsburgh leans on him to keep games within reach. He just signed a massive contract extension, and while kickers are usually replaceable, Boswell is operating on a different level than most of his peers.
He has shown he can make kicks in some of the toughest environments, and losing him would push the offense to an even lower place.

Steelers May Not Be Done Adding Weapons For Aaron Rodgers
The Steelers already made one notable move to keep Aaron Rodgers in place for 2026, and the addition of Michael Pittman Jr. gave the passing game a much-needed boost. Even so, Pittsburgh does not appear finished looking for help at receiver, which makes sense for a team trying to give Rodgers more than just one new target to lean on.
One veteran option on the market has drawn interest because he brings both production and versatility, even while playing through a messy quarterback situation in Washington last season. He could give the Steelers another layer of depth and a different kind of weapon in the passing game, and if Pittsburgh decides to keep shopping, this is the sort of name that would fit the profile of a late offseason addition worth watching. These Steelers Camp Names Could Change The Roster Conversation Fast
Training camp has a way of turning unknowns into conversation starters, and the Steelers have a few names who fit that mold. Undrafted defensive back Ahmari Harvey is in the mix to fight for a roster or practice-squad spot, while quarterbacks Will Howard and Drew Allar are part of the broader competition that always gets extra attention once the pads come on and the preseason starts to sort out who can actually stick.
Donte Kent is another player worth watching after missing his first NFL season, with camp offering a chance to show the athleticism that made him intriguing in the first place. Kaden Wetjen also adds a different kind of value as a return specialist, and if a few of these players flash early, they could change the way the roster conversation looks before August is over. Drew Allar Faces A Steelers Camp Test That Could Change Everything
Drew Allar is getting his first real Steelers camp test, and it comes with the kind of attention that follows a third-round pick in Pittsburgh. The team invested the No. 76 overall selection in a raw talent project, and training camp is now about seeing whether the early signs match the upside, with coaches watching his mechanics, pocket presence and ability to read the field.
Allar already has a roster spot secured, but this month still matters because it should give the Steelers a clearer picture of what he can become. Progress is expected to be incremental, not instant, and by the end of camp and preseason Pittsburgh should know a lot more about where he stands, even if the bigger questions around his long-term role are still ahead.
