T.J. Watt didn’t leave much room for debate in Week 1.
In Pittsburgh’s 20-13 win over the Atlanta Falcons at Acrisure Stadium, the Steelers star looked like the force everyone has come to expect. Watt was all over the game from start to finish, and his biggest swing came early in the fourth quarter when he picked off Cooper Rush and took it back for a touchdown to give Pittsburgh a 20-10 lead after Atlanta had a chance to tie the game or move in front.

That was the headline play, but it wasn’t the only one. Watt finished with two sacks, two quarterback hits and three tackles for loss, once again making life miserable for the Falcons’ offense.
Atlanta’s only real spark came from Bijan Robinson, who piled up 173 yards from scrimmage and scored a touchdown. Even so, Watt got the better of him several times and showed he can still be a problem against the run, too.
The performance mattered because there had been real noise about whether Watt had started to slip after an uneven 2025 season. That year, the former AP Defensive Player of the Year played 14 games and finished with 7.0 sacks, his second-lowest career total. He also missed Weeks 15 through 17 after suffering a partially collapsed lung during a dry needling treatment.
His pressure numbers told part of the same story. Watt produced 46 pressures in 2025, which ranked 36th in the NFL according to Pro Football Focus, even though he logged the 11th-most pass rush snaps at 466.
So one game doesn’t settle everything, but it sure pushed back against the idea that Watt is fading. He still looks like the centerpiece of Pittsburgh’s defense, especially with one of the league’s better pass rush groups around him helping to spread the attention.
And for a Steelers team that may need its defense to carry the load because of the offense’s limitations, that matters. Pittsburgh has talent on that side of the ball, but it still starts with Watt.
Nobody’s asking him to rewind the clock all the way to his peak. But if he can match his 2024 production - when he finished fourth in DPOY voting with 11.5 sacks and a league-leading six forced fumbles - that would give the Steelers a much higher ceiling.
