The Steelers’ season opener at Acrisure Stadium puts a lot on the shoulders of a defense that already has some moving parts, and the biggest piece is easy to spot: Jalen Ramsey.
Pittsburgh opens its 2026 regular season at home against the Atlanta Falcons, giving new head coach Mike McCarthy his first chance to start the year with a win in front of the home crowd. But the Falcons are not showing up to play the role of easy first-week opponent. Even with injury concerns and a first-year head coach of their own, they are looking to make noise in the NFC South.
For the Steelers, the assignment starts with slowing down Bijan Robinson and keeping tabs on Kyle Pitts and Drake London. That’s the challenge. The answer, at least on defense, runs through Ramsey.
Pittsburgh’s secondary already has a lot going on before the first snap is even taken. Joey Porter Jr.’s Week 1 status is up in the air as he works toward a mega-extension.
DeShon Elliott is out for at least the first four games while recovering from the lower-body injury that ended his 2025 season. And the group also includes two new starters in Jamel Dean and Jaquan Brisker, leaving the unit with a wide range of possible outcomes.
That’s where Ramsey becomes the central figure. The Steelers can use him at corner or safety, and they’ll need that flexibility right away.
Against the run, he may be asked to help deal with Robinson, whose ability to break tackles and create after contact stands out as one of the league’s best. Against the pass, Ramsey could spend plenty of time matched up with Pitts, who went over 1,000 receiving yards in 2025 and remains a player Pittsburgh has to account for.
If Ramsey looks sharp, the Steelers have a real chance to settle the game down. If he looks rusty, the problems could spread fast. He is the kind of defender who sets the tone with both his voice and his play, and Week 1 is a big test of that presence.
If he can’t handle Pitts in coverage or has trouble finishing on Robinson in space, Pittsburgh’s defense could be in for a long afternoon. That’s why Ramsey is the obvious player to watch in this matchup.
