The Pittsburgh Steelers are continuing their search for a new offensive coordinator, and their latest candidate brings a strong quarterback-centric pedigree. The team is set to interview New Orleans Saints quarterbacks coach Scott Tolzien, marking the second known interview for the role-Lunda Wells being the other.
Tolzien is fresh off a season in New Orleans, where he worked under offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. His primary focus was on developing young quarterbacks Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough, giving him recent, hands-on experience with grooming talent at the position. That kind of background could be exactly what the Steelers are looking for as they look to reshape their offensive identity.
Before his stint with the Saints, Tolzien served as quarterbacks coach in Dallas under Mike McCarthy, someone who’s remained a strong supporter of Tolzien’s coaching potential. That connection runs deep-McCarthy coached Tolzien during his playing days in Green Bay, where Tolzien spent three seasons as a backup quarterback from 2013 to 2015. It was during that time that Tolzien also developed a rapport with Aaron Rodgers, whose own NFL future remains a question mark.
Tolzien, now 38, entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin in 2011. He carved out a solid career as a backup, and his time at Wisconsin saw him earn Second-Team All-Big Ten honors in his senior season. After hanging up his cleats, he began his coaching career as an analyst-an increasingly common path for former quarterbacks looking to transition into coaching.
The Steelers have already chosen to retain quarterbacks coach Tom Arth, which signals a clear commitment to quarterback development moving forward. Bringing in Tolzien would only reinforce that direction. With McCarthy now on board to help mold the next chapter of the Steelers’ offense, adding someone like Tolzien-who has both player and coaching experience with quarterbacks-could be a smart move in building a cohesive developmental structure.
At this stage, it’s clear Pittsburgh is prioritizing a staff that can elevate its quarterback play. Whether that ends up being Tolzien or another candidate, the Steelers are putting the pieces in place to give their offense the kind of attention it’s been missing in recent years.
