The Steelers’ defensive front just lost a major piece, and that means a bigger stage is opening up for Yahya Black.
Derrick Harmon’s foot injury in Week 4 against the Cleveland Browns sent him to Injured Reserve, leaving Pittsburgh to reshuffle along the line. Head coach Mike McCarthy addressed the situation during his weekly press conference, and the message was clear enough: someone has to fill the gap.
That someone may be Sebastian Joseph-Day, who is expected to see more snaps, but the clearest path to a bigger role belongs to Black. The 2025 fifth-round pick is now in position to prove he can hold down a starter’s workload on the defensive front, and the next few weeks will tell the Steelers plenty about what he can handle.
The first job is obvious. Pittsburgh needs help against the run, and that has been a steady problem so far.
Through four games, the Steelers are allowing 112.8 rushing yards per game, which ranks 17th in the league. Black’s size gives them a body built for that kind of fight.
So far, he’s worked in a limited role, logging 83 snaps, or 35% of the possible defensive snaps, according to Pro Football Reference. Even in that smaller sample, he’s made his presence felt. Black has nine total tackles, including three solo stops, and he has 0.5 stuffs, per ESPN’s game data.
That production hints at a player who can hold his ground at the point of attack while his technique keeps developing. More reps should only give him more chances to make those plays show up on the stat sheet.
The timing matters, too. Pittsburgh faces Jonathan Taylor in Week 5, a tough assignment for any run defense. After that, the schedule eases a bit with matchups against the New Orleans Saints and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
And this defense has already been carrying a lot of the load while the offense tries to sort itself out. Takeaways have been a major reason why. The Steelers are tied for the second-most team takeaways in the league, with four interceptions and four forced fumbles.
Harmon was a big part of that, especially with his game-sealing strip sack of Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow in Week 3 that helped secure the Steelers’ second win.
Black has shown he can contribute in that area, too. Over 17 games played in 2025, he forced two fumbles and recovered another. With Harmon sidelined, Pittsburgh needs another disruptive defensive lineman to step forward, and Black now has the opening to do it.

Joey Porter Split Just Turned Into Something Steelers Fans Hate
Joey Porter Jr. has already settled into his new football home in Dallas, and his first game there gave Cowboys fans plenty to like on the defensive side. For Steelers fans, though, the familiar name attached to the move makes the whole split sting a little more, because this was never going to feel like a routine trade involving a talented young corner.
The bigger aftershock came after the game, when Joey Porter Sr. took to social media with a video aimed at the Steelers, accusing the organization of treating his son in a way he clearly did not appreciate. The backdrop here is a contract standoff that reportedly included a deal worth up to $28 million per season, but with the second year not fully guaranteed, and that gap appears to have been enough to push the relationship past the point of repair. Steelers Suddenly Have A Dream WR Option For Aaron Rodgers
The Steelers have spent the opening stretch of the season looking for more juice at wide receiver, and the search has not gotten any easier despite the offseason additions meant to help Aaron Rodgers. Pittsburgh still wants more proven talent in that room, but the options remain tricky with the current depth chart and the usual trade and free-agency hurdles that come with chasing help in October.
Tyreek Hill suddenly looms as the kind of name that can change the conversation, even with the major knee injury he is working back from. NFL insider Adam Schefter, citing Hills agent Drew Rosenhaus, reported that the star receiver is in negotiations with multiple teams, including the Kansas City Chiefs, which leaves Pittsburgh monitoring a possible dream fit while also knowing it may not be the favorite landing spot. Steelers CB Injury Crunch Could Push Familiar Veteran Onto Radar
With injuries thinning out the cornerback room, the Steelers are doing what teams in late-season roster churn often do and keeping a close eye on familiar names who might help without much risk. One of those options is Trevon Diggs, who is currently on the Seahawks practice squad and has the kind of background that can make a quick fit more realistic if Pittsburgh decides it needs another body on the back end.
Diggs also comes with a built-in connection to head coach Mike McCarthy, which matters when a team is weighing a short-term addition at a position where communication and comfort can matter as much as raw talent. Nothing official has been reported, but the Steelers search for cornerback help suggests they are leaving the door open if the right veteran becomes available. [Read more 🡒]
