Carson Bruener has made the kind of August jump that changes everything.
A player who entered the summer as little more than a name on a 90-man roster is now looking like a sure thing for the Pittsburgh Steelers. After a strong camp and two preseason games, the second-year linebacker has pushed himself into the spotlight and, at least for now, into roster-lock territory.
Bruener was one of the Steelers’ two seventh-round picks in the 2025 NFL Draft, taken with the 226th overall selection. General manager Omar Khan used the pick on the Washington linebacker, and because Bruener is the son of former Steelers tight end Mark Bruener, some fans immediately waved the nepotism flag. But this preseason has given him a different kind of label: earned.
Through the first two exhibition games, nobody on Pittsburgh’s roster has been more consistent. Bruener climbed to the second-team defense during training camp and then backed that up in game action.
Against the New York Jets in Week 2, he was one of the few bright spots in an otherwise rough night for the Steelers. Playing in the first half, he kept showing up around the football, and his top moment came on a sack, when he used speed-to-power to drive through the running back and get to the quarterback.
That was enough for Pittsburgh to pull him after just nine defensive snaps. Pro Football Focus handed him a 91.4 overall grade for the game against the Jets ($).
The linebacker picture got a little more crowded after Elandon Roberts was added to the mix following the Steelers’ first preseason game, which led to some questions about whether Bruener could get squeezed out. Roberts has continued to look like the same kind of forceful run defender he’s been in the past, but the likeliest roster casualty at linebacker appears to be Malik Harrison.
Bruener’s value goes beyond his defensive snaps, though. He has already established himself as a strong special teams piece, and that role matters. As a rookie in 2025, he played 247 special teams snaps, a hefty workload that only boosts his case now.
At 25, with a strong month of practice and preseason film behind him, there doesn’t seem to be much reason for the Steelers to move on. For a seventh-round pick, that’s not supposed to be the script. But Bruener has written a better one for himself, turning a fringe spot into what now looks like a roster lock.
