Steelers Suddenly Have A Guard Problem Before Bengals Week

Steelers face potential depth challenges on the offensive line as rookie Gennings Dunker deals with a knee injury, adding pressure amid existing team struggles.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are suddenly dealing with another problem on the interior of their offensive line, and this one involves rookie Gennings Dunker.

Dunker was listed as a limited participant on the team’s penultimate injury report ahead of Week 3 against the Cincinnati Bengals because of a knee injury. It’s the first time he has shown up on the report this season, and the timing isn’t ideal with Spencer Anderson already working through a bone break in his leg that he suffered in Week 2 against the New England Patriots.

A third-round pick from Iowa, Dunker has been working his way from tackle to guard since arriving in the NFL. He never really pushed into the right guard battle during the summer, as Anderson and Brock Hoffman handled the competition for the starting job before Anderson eventually won it.

The move inside was driven in part by Dunker’s lack of athleticism and some problems with his pass protection technique. At Iowa, he was much more of a run-game presence, and that profile fits guard better than tackle.

There were growing pains in camp, but Dunker showed some progress in the two preseason games he played. According to Pro Football Focus, he allowed just two pressures over 91 total reps at right guard.

So far in the regular season, though, he has been inactive for both of Pittsburgh’s games. That was the expectation entering the year, since he was viewed as a third-string guard.

Still, the Steelers’ offensive line has been rough enough that Dunker could get a chance later on if he gets healthy and the situation keeps sliding.

Anderson was a full participant in practice this week, although the injury clearly isn’t something he’s fully over. Hoffman was already in line to get a longer look at right guard because of Anderson’s struggles, and Anderson’s status only makes that possibility more real.

For now, Dunker’s injury leaves Hoffman as the only fully healthy guard on the 53-man roster. That’s not a comfortable place for Pittsburgh to be, though Ryan McCollum could step in at the position in a pinch if needed. The severity of Dunker’s knee injury is unknown.

Joey Porter Jr. Just Sparked A Steelers Debate He Can't Win

Joey Porter Jr. has only been in the league a short time, but he already knows what comes with a Steelers-Bengals week: every comment gets measured against the tape. After recent remarks suggesting he has never really had trouble with Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, the discussion around his matchup work has only grown louder, because Pittsburgh fans know Cincinnatis top receivers have been central figures in this rivalry for years.

The numbers behind those games paint a more complicated picture for Porter and the Steelers. Across the past three seasons, Chase and Higgins have consistently found production when Porter has been on the field, while his own coverage grades against Cincinnati have bounced around from game to game. It leaves Porter in a familiar spot for a young corner in a division that never lets anyone off the hook: the debate is already bigger than the quote, and the next meeting is the only place he can really settle it. Steelers Backfield Decision Just Got A Lot More Serious Before Bengals

The Steelers backfield picture got a little murkier this week with Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle both limited or missing practice because of injuries, leaving Pittsburgh with fewer clean answers as it prepares for Cincinnati. It is the kind of late-week development that can change how an offense is built, especially when the running game already has to absorb the ripple effects of a crowded injury report.

Pittsburgh has other players showing up as limited or absent, but the running back situation is the one demanding the most attention heading into the Bengals game. Depending on Dowdles availability, the Steelers may need to turn to the practice squad to add depth at the position, which would make Fridays final injury updates especially important. [Read more 🡒]

Joey Porter Jr. Just Gave Steelers Fans New Reason For Hope

Joey Porter Jr. finally spoke publicly about where he stands with the Steelers for the first time since the regular season began, and the message was encouraging for a defense that could use some stability. The cornerback said he wants to get back on the field once his back injury heals, while also making clear he still feels good about his teammates and remains open to playing for Pittsburgh again after the sides failed to strike a contract agreement before Week 1.

What stood out just as much was the change in Porters demeanor compared with earlier in the season. The article doesnt pin down exactly what prompted it, but the tone was noticeably different, and for Steelers fans that alone counts as a small dose of hope as they wait to see when he can return and whether the situation around him settles down with it.
