The Pittsburgh Steelers know their wide receiver room is thin, and they’re not pretending otherwise.
With Michael Pittman Jr. and Roman Wilson both on Injured Reserve, Aaron Rodgers is working with only two dependable targets, and that reality is pushing the team to search for help. Even after a gritty Week 6 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Steelers understand this setup won’t hold up for the rest of 2026.
According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, the team is “calling around” in hopes of finding a receiver upgrade. In a recent post on his Substack page, The Sweep with Tom Pelissero, he said general manager Omar Khan has been checking around the league, with Jalen Tolbert and KaVontae Turpin among the names linked to Pittsburgh because of their connection to head coach Mike McCarthy.
“Jalen Tolbert and KaVontae Turpin are the two guys with connections to Mike (McCarthy) that are on rosters now and know his offense,” he wrote. “But I haven’t heard of anything on either front. I do know the Steelers have been calling around on veteran wide receivers since the injuries last week and I’d imagine that continues with two WR on IR.”
That McCarthy connection is the obvious reason both names are surfacing. During McCarthy’s run as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, Tolbert and Turpin each had the best stretches of their careers.
Tolbert’s top season came in 2024, McCarthy’s final year in Dallas, when he played in all 17 games and finished with 49 catches for 610 yards and seven touchdowns.
Turpin also posted career highs that season, turning in 31 receptions for 420 yards and two touchdowns.
Those numbers at least explain why both receivers are being floated as possible fits. They know the offense, and they’ve produced under McCarthy before. But neither comes with a clean upside story.
Tolbert is the clearest example. Aside from that 610-yard season, he has never gone over 300 receiving yards in any other year, and in his fifth NFL season, his profile looks more like a depth piece than a difference-maker.
Turpin showed a little more in 2025 after McCarthy left, finishing with just under 400 receiving yards and two more touchdowns. Even so, that’s still the kind of production that keeps him in the same general category as Tolbert.
And that’s the issue for Pittsburgh. Adding another body would help the depth chart, which this injury-hit roster badly needs, but it wouldn’t really change the picture. These are useful, steady options - not the kind of addition that transforms the receiver group.
If the Steelers want a true upgrade, they’d have to get creative and pay for it. That appears unlikely, which points them toward cheaper veterans instead.
Without sending out a high draft pick, Pittsburgh isn’t landing a true No. 1 or No. 2 receiver. That leaves names like Tolbert and Turpin, free agents such as Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and practice squad options like KJ Osborn and Xavier Gipson.
The Steelers are clearly looking. The bigger question is how far they’re willing to go.

Aaron Rodgers Had A Ruthless Postgame Moment After Steelers Comeback Win
Aaron Rodgers spent much of Sunday night trading punches in the pocket and in the back-and-forth that followed, helping the Steelers survive a tense road test against Tampa Bay. Pittsburgh needed overtime to finish off a comeback win at Raymond James Stadium, and Rodgers was steady enough to keep them alive after a rough start, throwing for 253 yards with two touchdowns and one interception as the offense found just enough rhythm to get back in the game.
The postgame edge was there, too, after Rodgers had already answered a rookie's trash talk in real time. He later took aim at the field conditions in Tampa, adding another pointed note to a night that had plenty of them. For the Steelers, the result mattered most, but Rodgers made sure the game left a little extra residue beyond the standings. [Read more 🡒]
Steelers Finally Get Clarity On Joey Porter Jr. Trade Return
The Joey Porter Jr. trade finally moved from paperwork to certainty when he was active for the Dallas Cowboys' Week 6 game against the Green Bay Packers. That appearance satisfied the condition attached to the deal with Pittsburgh, giving the Steelers the clarity they had been waiting for on what they were getting back in return.
With the activation complete, Pittsburgh now has its full draft compensation secured and can close the book on the transaction. The return includes a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick, a resolution that lets the Steelers move on from the lingering uncertainty around Porter and look ahead to what those selections can mean down the road. Steelers Escaped Tampa But One Late Decision Will Be Debated
Pittsburgh left Tampa with a 26-19 overtime win, but the victory came with plenty to sort through on both sides of the ball. The offense never found a smooth rhythm for long stretches, and Jaylen Warrens limited first-half workload stood out in a game where the Steelers often needed more balance to help steady the tempo.
The defense delivered enough high-leverage moments to keep Pittsburgh alive, with interceptions from Jamel Dean and Daylen Everette and sacks from Jaylen Ramsey and Nick Herbig helping shape a tense finish. Still, the late-game management will linger as a talking point, especially after the Steelers had a chance to close it out in regulation and instead left the outcome hanging until overtime.
