Steelers Suddenly Face A Jonathan Taylor Problem They Cant Ignore

Can the Steelers' defense withstand the Colts' offensive powerhouse Jonathan Taylor without their key player Derrick Harmon on the field?

The Steelers are headed into a tricky stretch without Derrick Harmon, and the timing couldn’t be much worse.

Harmon went on injured reserve last week after suffering a toe injury, leaving Pittsburgh thinner on the defensive front just as Jonathan Taylor comes to town. That’s the kind of matchup that can expose a defense fast if it isn’t ready to absorb contact and win at the line of scrimmage.

Taylor has the resume to make life miserable for anyone trying to slow him down. Since entering the league, the former Wisconsin Badger has piled up 7,951 rushing yards, 1,538 receiving yards, and 82 total touchdowns.

When he’s healthy, No. 28 is the centerpiece of the Colts’ offense, and Indianapolis has shown no hesitation in leaning on him. This season, Taylor already ranks fifth in rushing yards with 353 and third in rushing touchdowns with six.

Jim Bob Cooter is expected to keep feeding him early and often.

That puts extra pressure on Pittsburgh, especially because Patrick Graham’s defense has had some trouble against the run lately. Through four games this season, the Steelers have given up 451 rushing yards, which works out to nearly 113 a game. And that was with Harmon still in the rotation.

Harmon’s absence stings because of the role he had been playing. The former Oregon Duck has been a steady force up front this season, recording a sack and a forced fumble while helping control the line of scrimmage and make it harder for opposing backs to find traction.

Now the job falls to rookie Gabriel Rubio, who is listed as Harmon’s immediate replacement on the depth chart. Rubio brings size at 6'5" and has built a reputation as a physical presence who can handle double teams and clog space in the middle.

In college, he played in 39 games with eight starts and totaled 66 tackles, including five for loss. He doesn’t bring Harmon’s pass-rush ability, but he can still make things uncomfortable in the backfield.

If Rubio can’t provide enough disruption, Graham may have to lean harder on pressure looks to create problems at the line. That could also put more on linebackers Patrick Queen and Payton Wilson, who may be asked to serve as safety valves for a defense trying to keep Taylor from taking over. A few alignment tweaks, with one of them creeping closer to the line on certain snaps, wouldn’t be a surprise.

For Pittsburgh, the formula is simple enough: role players have to answer the call.

Steelers Veterans Already Facing Real Roster Pressure After Rough Start

A rough first quarter of the 2026 season has already put several Steelers veterans in an uncomfortable spot, as the early roster picture in Pittsburgh is starting to tighten. Performance issues, injuries and a deeper-than-expected level of competition have combined to make the margin for error smaller than it usually is this early, and a handful of familiar names are now fighting simply to stay in the conversation as the team evaluates its depth chart.

Asante Samuel Jr., Spencer Anderson, Rayshawn Jenkins, Rico Dowdle, Patrick Queen and Michael Pittman Jr. are all in the mix as players whose standing could shift if the early struggles continue. For the Steelers, the bigger question is not just who has underperformed, but how long the staff is willing to wait before making changes that could affect both the roster and the pecking order behind it. Steelers Suddenly Have A Real Chance To Build Momentum

A 2-2 start has the Steelers at a familiar crossroads entering Week 5, but the next stretch on the schedule gives them a real opening to change the tone of their season. Several opponents coming up carry their own injury concerns and roster issues, which could make this a favorable run for Pittsburgh if it can stay steady and take care of business.

Indianapolis, Tampa Bay, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Carolina all come with some degree of uncertainty on the other side, and that matters for a Steelers team looking for traction. With the early part of the season still leaving plenty unsettled, this feels like the sort of window good teams use to stack wins and bad teams waste, and Pittsburgh has a chance to show which path it is on. Big Ben Delivered One Of The Wildest Steelers Wins Ever

On a strange October afternoon in 2014, the Steelers and Colts turned Heinz Field into a showcase for one of the wildest offensive explosions in franchise history. Ben Roethlisberger authored the kind of performance that still comes up whenever Pittsburghs most memorable regular-season games are discussed, setting team marks with six touchdown passes and piling up 522 passing yards while completing 40 of 49 throws in a 51-34 win.

What made the game feel even more out of control was how quickly the scoring kept coming, with key plays and scoring drives feeding a track meet that Indianapolis could not slow down. It was the sort of victory that reminded Steelers fans how often Roethlisberger could drag a game into chaos and still leave Pittsburgh standing, even if the full sequence of how that afternoon unfolded is the part that still gets remembered most.
