The Pittsburgh Steelers are setting the stage for an exciting new chapter. With Mike McCarthy at the helm and a fresh coaching staff in place, the team has bolstered its roster by bringing in talents like Michael Pittman Jr., Jamel Dean, and Rico Dowdle. Plus, with 12 picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, the Steelers have plenty of options to further strengthen their squad.
However, one pressing issue remains: finding a long-term solution for Nick Herbig. At just 24, Herbig is entering the final year of his rookie contract. While he's mostly been a rotational backup at outside linebacker, his potential as a full-time player is undeniable, and that comes with the expectation of a hefty contract extension.
Herbig's youth and ability to pressure the quarterback make him a valuable asset, and Pittsburgh would be wise to keep him. But with three elite edge rushers on the payroll, including T.J.
Watt, the financial implications are significant. Meanwhile, teams like the Dallas Cowboys are showing interest in Herbig as a trade target.
The Steelers might consider a different approach: trading Alex Highsmith to the Cowboys instead. Ideally, Pittsburgh would retain all three edge rushers-Watt, Herbig, and Highsmith-and rotate them to maintain peak performance. However, with recent free agents like Jaelan Phillips and Boye Mafe commanding $20-30 million annually, Herbig is aware of his market value.
Herbig is eager to step into a starting role, and given his talent and age, it’s easy to see why. But another substantial contract alongside Watt's could strain the Steelers' financial flexibility. This makes Highsmith, a versatile rusher capable of excelling in various defensive roles, an appealing trade option.
The Cowboys, transitioning to a 3-4 defense under new coordinator Christian Parker, would find Highsmith an ideal fit. While Herbig might fetch a second-round pick or more, Highsmith's trade value might be slightly lower due to his age.
A potential deal could involve Dallas sending a third-round pick, acquired from the 49ers, to Pittsburgh. A 2027 pick swap could further sweeten the pot for the Steelers.
Executing this trade would provide the Cowboys with a proven edge rusher to bolster their defense during a Super Bowl push. For Pittsburgh, it would resolve the Herbig situation, allowing them to secure him with a long-term deal. Additionally, acquiring a fourth third-round pick in the 2026 draft would offer the Steelers immense flexibility, whether they choose to trade up or secure future assets.
