Steelers Stun Fans by Re-Signing Key Offensive Lineman

The Steelers secure a key piece of their offensive line by re-signing Ryan McCollum, whose versatility has proven invaluable over the past seasons.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have secured the services of offensive lineman Ryan McCollum for another year, as announced on Friday. This move brings back the 28-year-old, who had ventured into restricted free agency without receiving a tender offer before last Wednesday's deadline. While the financial specifics of this new deal remain undisclosed, it's a strategic re-signing for the Steelers.

McCollum, who played last season under a $1.04 million contract, would have required a $3.52 million offer for 2026 to retain his rights as a restricted free agent. His journey with the Steelers has seen him primarily serve as a backup center over the past two seasons, stepping up for three starts in four years, filling in for Zach Frazier when needed.

Originally joining the Steelers from the Detroit Lions' waiver list back in August 2022, McCollum's path has been one of perseverance. After being waived post-training camp, he found his place on the practice squad, dedicating the entirety of the 2022 and 2023 seasons there without seeing regular-season action.

The 6-foot-5, 300-pound Texas A&M product made his mark in 2024. Starting third on the depth chart, injuries to Nate Herbig and Frazier propelled him into action.

McCollum capitalized on this opportunity, appearing in all 17 games and starting twice. Although his role diminished slightly in 2025, with just one start, he remained a reliable presence throughout the season.

Looking ahead to 2026, McCollum is expected to continue as the primary backup to Frazier, while also adding depth to the guard position. His return underscores the Steelers' commitment to maintaining a solid offensive line and ensuring depth in key positions.
