Before his unfortunate forearm injury in Week 17 against the Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Darnell Washington was making waves as a unique force in the team's offense. Standing tall at 6-foot-7 and weighing 264 pounds, the former Georgia Bulldog was carving out a special role.
Jonnu Smith, Washington’s former teammate, couldn’t help but sing his praises on Jordan Schultz’s podcast. "He's like a giant kid out there," Smith shared.
"As a football player, he had an incredible year with some standout plays. Honestly, lining up next to him made me feel small, and that’s saying something.
There’s really no one else like him in the league."
Washington, at 24, was picked in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, and he’s been steadily improving. Over his first two seasons, he caught 26 passes for 261 yards and a touchdown. Last season alone, he surpassed those numbers with 31 receptions for 364 yards.
Even Aaron Rodgers couldn’t help but admire Washington’s talent after a spectacular play against the Cincinnati Bengals. "Defenses are definitely wary of him, and rightly so," Rodgers remarked.
"He’s a powerhouse - hurdling defenders, delivering stiff arms, and bulldozing through tackles. His blocking?
He’s taking down multiple defenders at once. It’s his approach and growth since training camp that really stand out."
Washington’s potential in Pittsburgh is undeniable, and his impact on the field is something to watch closely.
