Steelers Sideline Tension Just Put Week 5 Pressure On McCarthy

As tensions rise between star quarterback Aaron Rodgers and Coach Mike McCarthy, the Steelers face internal and on-field hurdles that must be addressed to salvage their season.

The Steelers’ rough start has pushed Mike McCarthy into full fix-it mode.

At 2-2, Pittsburgh heads into Week 5 trying to steady itself against the Colts, and McCarthy isn’t sugarcoating where things stand. The offense has been uneven, the defense has slipped from its usual standard, and the pressure has shown up in plain sight - including on the sideline during Thursday night’s 27-24 loss to the Browns.

That game produced one of the clearest snapshots of the Steelers’ frustration. During Pittsburgh’s opening possession, Aaron Rodgers and McCarthy were caught on the broadcast exchanging expletives on the sideline while Rodgers waited for a play call.

Not long after, Roman Wilson scored a touchdown. McCarthy said afterward he would have chosen different words.

Earlier that week, Rodgers had also voiced frustration about the Steelers’ play-calling, and the same week the team traded Joey Porter Jr. to the Cowboys.

McCarthy’s response now is simple: tighten everything up and stop worrying about anything outside the building.

"We need to clean our own house," McCarthy said via The Athletic. "Our house is not clean right now."

The numbers back up the concern. Pittsburgh is averaging 317.8 total yards per game, which puts the team in the middle of the league.

The scoring output has been worse, with the Steelers sitting near the bottom at 20.3 points per game. Even the defense, usually the unit that gives Pittsburgh its edge, is only in the middle of the pack right now.

Rodgers has already been sacked 13 times.

The Colts are next, and McCarthy knows that won’t be a soft landing spot. He said the team will use practice time to "self-scout" and look for ways to improve both performance and morale.

"I get it, it’s Week 5. So, you’re hard-pressed to find a team or two that feels really good about where they are right now.

That’s the norm. So we’re going to stay after the focus of what we need to work on," McCarthy said via Trib Live.

"That’s what this weekend was about for me, and we’ve been working on it as a coaching staff, and we’ll have clear factors of what we need to do as far as cleaning our house, and then we’ll get ready to go beat Indianapolis."

Steelers Veterans Already Facing Real Roster Pressure After Rough Start

A rough first quarter of the 2026 season has already put several Steelers veterans in an uncomfortable spot, as the early roster picture in Pittsburgh is starting to tighten. Performance issues, injuries and a deeper-than-expected level of competition have combined to make the margin for error smaller than it usually is this early, and a handful of familiar names are now fighting simply to stay in the conversation as the team evaluates its depth chart.

Asante Samuel Jr., Spencer Anderson, Rayshawn Jenkins, Rico Dowdle, Patrick Queen and Michael Pittman Jr. are all in the mix as players whose standing could shift if the early struggles continue. For the Steelers, the bigger question is not just who has underperformed, but how long the staff is willing to wait before making changes that could affect both the roster and the pecking order behind it. Steelers Suddenly Have A Real Chance To Build Momentum

A 2-2 start has the Steelers at a familiar crossroads entering Week 5, but the next stretch on the schedule gives them a real opening to change the tone of their season. Several opponents coming up carry their own injury concerns and roster issues, which could make this a favorable run for Pittsburgh if it can stay steady and take care of business.

Indianapolis, Tampa Bay, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Carolina all come with some degree of uncertainty on the other side, and that matters for a Steelers team looking for traction. With the early part of the season still leaving plenty unsettled, this feels like the sort of window good teams use to stack wins and bad teams waste, and Pittsburgh has a chance to show which path it is on. Steelers Suddenly Face A Jonathan Taylor Problem They Cant Ignore

Derrick Harmon landing on injured reserve with a toe injury leaves the Steelers making another adjustment up front, and rookie Gabriel Rubio is set to step into his role on the defensive line. It is the kind of reshuffle Pittsburgh can manage in the short term, but it also arrives at a time when the defense has already had trouble holding up against the run.

Jonathan Taylor and the Colts are the next test, and that is where the concern really sharpens for Pittsburgh. With the run defense still searching for consistency, the Steelers are staring at a matchup that could force them to prove the front can absorb the loss of Harmon without letting one of the leagues most dangerous backs control the game.
