The Pittsburgh Steelers lost a key part of their offense when running back Rico Dowdle was carted to the locker room during the game against the New England Patriots.
Dowdle’s injury came on a strip sack by New England just outside the red zone, with the loose ball bouncing back toward midfield. He was in the scramble for it, but took contact a couple of times while trying to recover the ball and did not come away with it.
Per Steelers Now’s Alan Saunders, Dowdle is dealing with a toe injury and is questionable to return.
The 28-year-old arrived in Pittsburgh this offseason on a two-year, $12.25 million contract, joining the Steelers after reuniting with his former Dallas Cowboys head coach, Mike McCarthy.
Before exiting, Dowdle had 11 rushing yards on four carries and added nine receiving yards on one catch. In the Week 1 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, he finished with 15 yards on eight carries and two receptions for six yards.
For a Steelers offense that has had trouble getting much going early this season, especially on the ground, Dowdle’s status matters. If he’s out for any length of time, the burden shifts even more heavily onto Jaylen Warren, who should handle most of the backfield work.
Travis Homer, elevated from the practice squad this week, is next in line behind Warren. Since Dowdle left, Homer has picked up 16 yards on two carries.
Eli Heidenreich is the other running back on the roster, though he has not recorded a touch through the first six quarters of his NFL career.
Homer has shown some efficiency in a limited sample and can help take some of the load off Warren, but Warren is still the one who will be leaned on heavily both as a runner and as a receiver until there’s more clarity on Dowdle’s injury.
The Steelers are hoping the toe issue isn’t serious. Until they know more, Warren’s role is set to grow for an offense that badly needs a spark after a sluggish start.
