The Pittsburgh Steelers will open their preseason without the player many fans were hoping to see most.
Rookie offensive tackle Max Iheanachor, the team’s first-round pick, is out for Thursday night’s matchup with the Green Bay Packers at Acrisure Stadium because of a neck/shoulder injury. Head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed the news, and Chris Adamski of TribLIVE reported it.
Iheanachor hurt himself during Steelers training camp practice on August 6 and has already missed Saturday Night Lights at Latrobe Memorial Stadium, along with two practices after that. McCarthy said the rookie is still working back from the injury and pointed to the strength work still ahead of him.
"Yeah, I think what he accomplished yesterday tells you where he is. You know, we used the individual drills to see what he can do.
He's just working his way back. It's just like any return from injury.
There's a strength component that we are trying to get over, and there are some things we want to see him do with his pads and a helmet on.
He's making progress. I do not see him playing Thursday night, but he's getting close."
For Pittsburgh, it’s a frustrating pause for a player who had been trending in the right direction. Iheanachor only began playing American football in 2021 at the junior college level, so every rep matters as he adjusts to the jump in competition. He had been having a strong rookie camp, and the Steelers would have loved to get him as many preseason snaps as possible.
That won’t happen now. Even if McCarthy had planned to manage his workload carefully, Iheanachor is down to just two remaining exhibition games to get live reps before the regular season starts in September. Those chances matter in his battle with Dylan Cook for the starting right tackle job.
The timing is especially tough because Pittsburgh used significant draft capital to bring him in during the 2026 NFL Draft, and the expectation is that he’ll eventually take over the starting role. For now, though, he’s simply trying to get healthy and get back on the practice field, with August 15 circled as the team’s first practice after Thursday’s preseason opener.
The Steelers’ second preseason game comes Friday, August 21, against the New York Jets at Acrisure Stadium, and Pittsburgh will be hoping Iheanachor is ready to go by then.

Former Steelers RB Granted Prison Release Amid Heartbreaking Family Crisis
Wendell Smallwood Jr. is heading home sooner than expected after a judge granted him a path out of prison, a stunning development for the former Steelers running back amid a deeply personal family crisis. Smallwood had been serving time after pleading guilty to COVID-related fraud and unlawful possession of an assault firearm, but a recent New Jersey court ruling on the states assault weapons ban gave him grounds to revisit that plea.
The timing matters far beyond the legal details. Smallwoods daughter, Mila, is battling an aggressive childhood kidney cancer and is in palliative care, leaving the family focused on being together as much as possible right now. For a player once known in Pittsburgh for his on-field role, the story has shifted entirely to a painful off-field fight that has now opened the door to an earlier reunion. [Read more 🡒]
Steelers Camp Suddenly Has A Receiver Opening Fans Need To Watch
Training camp always creates openings, but the Steelers have one at receiver that suddenly feels worth watching. With preseason work underway and the roster still taking shape, the top of the depth chart was lighter at practice Monday, which pushed more attention toward the young wideouts trying to make a case. Germie Bernard and Roman Wilson are the names most likely to benefit, and every rep matters at this stage when the staff is sorting out who can be trusted once the games start counting.
The wider backdrop only adds to the intrigue. Pittsburgh is also working through a quarterback competition, with Will Howard and Drew Allar still battling for the starting job, so the receiving room is being evaluated in a setting where every throw carries extra weight. For the young pass catchers, the timing could not be better, because a few missed practices at the top can quickly turn into a real chance to move up the pecking order. [Read more 🡒]
Aaron Rodgers Is Already Shaping A Big Steelers QB Decision
Drew Allar has been one of the more interesting quarterback stories in Steelers camp, and not just because he has flashed in passing periods. The young passer has been getting a closer look while working alongside Aaron Rodgers, and that mentorship has already become part of his development. For a team always thinking ahead at quarterback, any progress from Allar matters, especially when it comes in a setting where every rep is being watched and evaluated.
Recent 7-on-7 work only added to the intrigue, with Allar stacking together some noteworthy completions as he continues to settle in. The attention now is on how much he can take from Rodgers in the coming weeks, particularly on the finer points that separate a promising arm from a more complete NFL quarterback. Steelers observers do not need much imagination to see why this is becoming a bigger conversation inside camp. [Read more 🡒]
