Steelers Rookie Jack Sawyer Set for First Start After Big Injury News

With injuries creating a void in the Steelers defense, rookie Jack Sawyer prepares to seize a breakout opportunity against one of the leagues toughest offensive lines.

Steelers Rookie Jack Sawyer Prepares for Potential First Start vs. Lions: “I’m Ready”

With both T.J. Watt and Nick Herbig listed as questionable heading into the Steelers' matchup against the Detroit Lions, all signs point to rookie edge rusher Jack Sawyer potentially getting the call for his first NFL start. And if that happens, it won’t be a soft landing - he’ll be lining up across from one of the league’s best in Lions right tackle Penei Sewell.

It’s a big moment, no doubt. But Sawyer’s been building toward it all season.

The fourth-round pick out of Ohio State has quietly carved out a role on special teams, earning praise from the coaching staff for his consistent effort and playmaking ability. Now, with injuries thinning the edge rotation, he’s in line for a bigger role - and his coaches believe he’s ready to meet the moment.

Tomlin Sees the Signs

Mike Tomlin didn’t mince words when asked about Sawyer’s development. The Steelers head coach has seen this story before - young defenders who cut their teeth on special teams, then make the leap when their number is called on defense.

“Jack is doing what a lot of young quality defenders do,” Tomlin said. “They make the best with what you ask them to do and work in all areas and get better.”

Tomlin pointed to Sawyer’s steady growth and early flashes - including a sack and an interception - as evidence that the rookie’s playmaking instincts are translating. And while facing Sewell is no easy task, Tomlin wouldn’t be surprised if Sawyer rises to the occasion.

“He’s made some plays on teams. Made some plays on teams last night,” Tomlin added. “So I’m never surprised when they transfer that playmaking to the defensive side when they get more opportunities to do so.”

Highsmith: “He’s Progressively Gotten Better”

Veteran edge rusher Alex Highsmith has been watching Sawyer’s progress up close, and he likes what he sees.

“He’s progressively gotten better each week,” Highsmith said - exactly what you want from a young player learning the ropes in the NFL.

Sawyer has been a sponge, soaking up knowledge from a deep and talented edge room that includes Watt, Highsmith, and Herbig. That preparation may pay off in a big way this week.

Austin: “He’s Not Afraid of Those Moments”

Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin saw something in Sawyer when he studied his college film. At Ohio State, Sawyer wasn’t just another cog in the machine - he showed up when it mattered most.

“When it was tough and they needed a big play, he was a guy that was around,” Austin said. “So he’s not afraid of those moments.”

That’s the kind of mentality the Steelers need now, especially with Watt and Herbig still sidelined at practice. Austin praised Sawyer’s consistency and work ethic, and believes he’s ready to step in and contribute if called upon.

Sawyer: “This Is What You Play the Game For”

For his part, Sawyer isn’t letting the moment get too big. He’s staying grounded, focused on the day-to-day work that’s gotten him to this point.

“I’m ready,” Sawyer said. “I’m going day by day trying to get better and get myself ready for anything, just trying to grow as a player, gain knowledge and be ready for whatever opportunity lies in front of me.”

He knows what’s at stake - a late-season game with playoff implications, under the lights, against a tough opponent. And he’s embracing it.

“This is what you live for. This is what you play the game for,” he said.

“Being later in the year, the games get heightened. That’s what you play this game for.

It’s exciting and it’s a great opportunity for us.”

Next Man Up

Sawyer has been one of Pittsburgh’s most consistent special teamers this season, but now the stakes are higher. With the Steelers fighting for playoff position and injuries reshaping the defense, the rookie may be asked to play a critical role against one of the NFL’s most balanced offenses.

It’s a tall task - but one Pittsburgh believes he’s ready for. And if Sawyer’s past is any indication, he won’t shy away from the moment.
