Germie Bernard didn’t waste much time making his presence felt in the Pittsburgh Steelers’ opening preseason game against the Green Bay Packers.
The rookie wide receiver, who had been relatively quiet through training camp while working across all three positions, came out sharp in the first half and looked every bit like a player ready to push for a bigger role. Early on, Bernard hauled in a 13-yard catch with the Steelers backed up near their own end zone, helping turn the possession into 3rd-and-manageable. Not long after, he showed off another part of his game, taking a pass in the flat and spinning through two tackles with the kind of contact balance that stands out right away.
By the time the first half wrapped up, Bernard had already stacked more than 30 yards after the catch, a skill set the Steelers clearly valued when they picked the Alabama product. He finished the half with four receptions for 51 yards, which was good for second on the team behind veteran tight end Robert Tonyan.
