Steelers' New Weapon: Rico Dowdle Brings Power to Pittsburgh
The Pittsburgh Steelers have bolstered their backfield with the acquisition of running back Rico Dowdle, who’s riding high after two consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons. Now, clad in the iconic Black and Gold, Dowdle's aiming to replicate that success in Pittsburgh.
Reflecting on his past achievements, Dowdle shared with Missi Matthews of Steelers.com, “While I’m proud of what I’ve done, it’s all about what I can achieve now. I’ve got to prove myself again this year. Being undrafted, reaching those milestones was huge, but the focus is on moving forward and doing it all over again.”
Dowdle made waves last season with the Carolina Panthers, particularly shining in a standout performance against the Dallas Cowboys. In that game, he racked up 239 total yards from scrimmage, including 183 rushing yards on 30 carries and a touchdown. Through the air, he added four receptions for 56 yards and another score, leading the Panthers to a thrilling 30-27 victory.
Another highlight came against the Miami Dolphins, where Dowdle rushed for 206 yards on 23 carries, boasting a 9.0-yard average, and scored a touchdown. His all-around effort, including 28 receiving yards, propelled the Panthers to a narrow 27-24 win.
Dowdle’s approach to the game is refreshingly old-school. He thrives on physicality, aiming to overpower defenders with every run. “Since I was little, I’ve taken pride in being the guy who can deliver a hit,” Dowdle said at his introductory press conference.
His time under Mike McCarthy in Dallas from 2020 to 2024 has shaped his game, aligning perfectly with McCarthy’s physical run schemes. “Coach McCarthy likes it physical, and that’s exactly how I play,” Dowdle noted.
The camaraderie in the Steelers' backfield is already building. Jaylen Warren, another undrafted talent, reached out to Dowdle last season, praising his tenacity and style. Now teammates, the duo is poised to form a formidable partnership for Pittsburgh.
“Jaylen reached out to me last year, appreciating my play style and encouraging me. Now that we’re together, it’s about showcasing what undrafted guys can do,” Dowdle remarked.
With Dowdle and Warren teaming up, the Steelers’ ground game is set to be both dynamic and punishing. Fans should be excited for what this powerful duo can deliver in the upcoming season.
