The Pittsburgh Steelers walked away from their Week 13 loss to the Buffalo Bills with more than just a mark in the loss column - they’re now dealing with a pair of key defensive injuries that could impact their plans moving forward.
Head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the status of linebacker Patrick Queen and cornerback James Pierre in his postgame press conference, offering some early clarity on what happened to both players during the game.
According to Tomlin, Queen suffered a contusion that left him unable to run, which is why he was ruled out and didn’t return. The injury was initially listed as a hip issue, and while Queen was first deemed questionable to return, he was quickly downgraded to out before the end of the first half.
That’s never a great sign, especially for a player who’s been a consistent presence in the middle of Pittsburgh’s defense all season. Malik Harrison filled in for Queen the rest of the way.
As for Pierre, he’s now in the concussion protocol after exiting the game. There wasn’t much detail beyond that, but any time a player enters protocol, it sets off a step-by-step process that can take time - and there’s no guarantee of a quick return. In Pierre’s absence, Asante Samuel Jr. slid into the outside cornerback role.
Both injuries come at a tough time for the Steelers, who are preparing for a divisional showdown with the Baltimore Ravens next Sunday. Queen’s availability will be especially closely watched, given his history with the Ravens and the physical presence he brings to the Steelers’ front seven. If he can’t go, Harrison will likely see an expanded role again, but replacing Queen’s range and play recognition won’t be easy.
Pierre’s situation is also one to monitor, especially with the Ravens’ speed on the perimeter. Samuel Jr. has experience, but the Steelers’ secondary depth will be tested if Pierre isn’t cleared in time.
We’ll keep an eye on both players throughout the week as Pittsburgh looks to regroup and get healthier ahead of a crucial AFC North matchup.
