The Pittsburgh Steelers are continuing their search for a new offensive coordinator, and one of the names on their radar is Dallas Cowboys tight ends coach Lunda Wells. Wells has been a steady presence in Dallas since 2020, originally brought on board by Mike McCarthy. Even after McCarthy handed over offensive play-calling duties to Brian Schottenheimer, Wells remained in place - a testament to the value he brings to the staff.
During his time with the Cowboys, Wells has played a key role in the development of tight ends Dalton Schultz and Jake Ferguson. Schultz emerged as a reliable target in the passing game before heading to Houston, while Ferguson has blossomed into a two-time Pro Bowler under Wells’ guidance.
That kind of track record doesn’t go unnoticed in NFL circles. Wells is now viewed as one of the league’s rising coaching talents, and the Steelers aren’t the only team interested - he’s also interviewed for the Washington Commanders’ offensive coordinator opening.
What makes Wells an intriguing candidate for Pittsburgh is more than just his résumé with tight ends. He’s part of a new wave of young, innovative coaches who are gaining traction across the league.
The Steelers are clearly doing their homework across the spectrum, with other names like Saints quarterbacks coach Scott Tolzien also in the mix. Tolzien, another young coach with upside, fits the mold of a forward-thinking hire.
But Pittsburgh isn’t ignoring experience either - veterans like Alex Van Pelt and Luke Getsy are reportedly under consideration as well.
Still, the interest in Wells seems to signal where the Steelers might be leaning: toward fresh ideas and coaches with a proven ability to develop talent. That’s especially important for a team trying to figure out its offensive identity moving forward.
Wells’ connection to McCarthy adds another layer to this. McCarthy’s influence is clearly still felt in Pittsburgh’s coaching search, and that’s also reflected in the defensive coordinator conversation.
Patrick Graham, who worked with McCarthy in Green Bay, is rumored to be in the mix for that role. Between Graham and Wells, it’s evident that the Steelers are tapping into McCarthy’s coaching tree as they look to fill key positions on both sides of the ball.
At this stage, nothing is finalized, but the Steelers’ interest in Lunda Wells is real - and it’s easy to see why. He’s helped shape a strong position group in Dallas, he’s earned respect around the league, and he’s part of a coaching generation that could help take Pittsburgh’s offense into the future.
