Steelers Now Have A Darnell Washington Story Fans Will Be Talking About

Steelers' tight end Darnell Washington faces a hefty fine for a controversial touchdown celebration that has sparked debate among fans about the NFL's disciplinary measures.

Darnell Washington’s touchdown catch in the Steelers’ Week 7 win over the New Orleans Saints gave Pittsburgh a 10-3 lead in the second quarter, but the play wound up drawing attention from the league for a different reason.

The NFL announced its Week 7 fines and hit Washington with a $14,926 penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, citing “Illegal celebrations and vulgar acts.” The fine came after his touchdown celebration following the scoring grab from Aaron Rodgers.

The league also fined wide receiver Brandon Smith $4,916 for use of the helmet.

Washington’s day on the stat sheet was brief but productive: one catch, four yards, one touchdown. That was enough to help Pittsburgh finish off a 16-10 win and improve to 5-2.

The reaction to the fine was quick, and plenty of fans weren’t impressed. One called the NFL “CLAHNS,” another wrote “NFL= soft.”

Another asked, “Really? Really?

This is getting ridiculous,” while one more posted, “Dawg cmon” along with multiple laughing-crying emojis.

Even with the fine hanging over him, Washington remains a major part of what the Steelers are doing on offense. Pittsburgh is missing two of its top wide receivers in Roman Wilson (finger) and Michael Pittman Jr. (foot). Pat Freiermuth is healthy and playing, though he was dealing with a calf issue two weeks ago.

Rodgers is leaning on Washington as a pass-catcher, but the Steelers also value him as a key part of the run game. He’s often used as a blocker for Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle, with many around the team viewing him as essentially another left tackle. That role has helped fuel one of the NFL’s best rushing attacks.

As Pittsburgh pushes toward the top of the AFC North and beyond, Washington figures to stay central to the offense. The fine may have ended that particular celebration, but the Steelers would love to have more of his touchdowns to celebrate this season.

Pittsburgh hosts the Cleveland Browns at Acrisure Stadium in Week 8, then heads into the bye week before returning for its second game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Steelers are 0-1 against the Browns and 1-0 against the Bengals so far this season.

Steelers Face A Brutal AFC North Test That Could Swing Everything

A familiar AFC North grind is back on the schedule, and it comes with the kind of stakes and tension that usually follow these two teams into December. The Steelers and Browns have built a rivalry on tight, physical games, and this one is being framed the same way, with the usual emphasis on field position, turnovers and whichever defense can force the other side into mistakes.

Pittsburgh enters with the edge in most of the preview talk, but only by a sliver, which says plenty about how little room there is for error in this matchup. The panels thinking leans toward the Steelers in a close one, with the outcome expected to hinge on whether their defense can keep Cleveland from turning a rugged divisional game into something more dangerous on the road. Steelers Safety DeShon Elliott Just Returned From An Injury Worse Than Fans Knew

DeShon Elliotts return in Week 7 gave the Steelers a much-needed boost in the secondary, but it also came with a sobering backstory. The safety had been working his way back from a season-ending hamstring injury, and his recovery kept him out of the lineup to start the year while Pittsburgh managed its defensive depth without him.

Elliott described the rehab process as a long one, and his comeback adds another layer to a defense that has had to stay sharp through injuries and turnover. With Lamar Jackson expected back for Baltimore in Week 8 after missing three games with a high-ankle sprain, the AFC North race is only getting more demanding, and Pittsburgh will be leaning on every healthy body it can get. Steelers Playoff Path Suddenly Looks Far Less Brutal Than Expected

The second half of the Steelers 2025 schedule looked daunting when it first came into focus, but the picture has shifted enough to make the path feel less punishing than expected. Matchups that once seemed like clear obstacles now come with more uncertainty, and that matters for a Pittsburgh team trying to stay in the playoff mix while navigating a stretch that still includes several name-brand opponents.

Philadelphia no longer looks quite as imposing without some of the pieces that made it such a difficult draw, Denvers offense has been uneven, and Houston has not defended at the level many expected. Baltimore still brings the usual rivalry edge, but the Ravens have also had to absorb roster changes while leaning heavily on Lamar Jackson, which gives the Steelers a little more reason to believe this late-season run can be manageable if they handle their business.
