Steelers Meet Brian Flores In Person Amid Head Coach Search

Two familiar names are emerging as top contenders in the Steelers head coaching search amid a competitive field of candidates.

For the first time in nearly two decades, the Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing for life after Mike Tomlin. The longtime head coach, who brought stability, playoff appearances, and a Super Bowl title to the franchise, is out. Now, the Steelers are in unfamiliar territory: searching for the next leader to guide them into a new era.

And that search is heating up.

Two familiar names are set for second interviews in Pittsburgh this week: Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver and Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores.

Let’s start with Flores. Steelers fans will remember him from his brief stint in Pittsburgh back in 2022.

After parting ways with the Dolphins, Flores joined Tomlin’s staff as a senior defensive assistant and linebackers coach. Though he was only with the team for a year, his impact was felt-particularly in mentoring a young defense and contributing to game-planning.

He left for Minnesota the following season and has since turned the Vikings' defense into one of the stingiest units in the league. This year, Minnesota ranked third in total yards allowed-an impressive feat considering the roster turnover and injuries they dealt with throughout the season.

Flores brings a tough, no-nonsense approach to defense, forged during his time under Bill Belichick in New England. He’s known for aggressive schemes, adaptability, and getting the most out of his personnel.

And perhaps most importantly for Pittsburgh, he already knows the culture. He’s walked the halls, coached the players, and understands what it means to wear the black and gold.

That familiarity could go a long way in a franchise that values continuity and identity.

Then there’s Anthony Weaver. A former NFL defensive lineman himself, Weaver has steadily climbed the coaching ladder, building a reputation as a strong communicator and a sharp defensive mind. He took over as Miami’s defensive coordinator in 2024, after previous stops with the Texans (as DC) and Ravens (as defensive line coach).

While the Dolphins’ defense didn’t exactly light up the stat sheet this season-finishing 22nd in total yards allowed-context matters. Miami’s unit dealt with a rash of injuries and inconsistent play from the secondary, yet Weaver kept the group competitive. His background with Baltimore, where he helped develop a physical, disciplined defensive front, is something that aligns well with Pittsburgh’s long-standing defensive identity.

Weaver also brings a different energy-he’s younger, seen as a rising star, and has earned praise for his leadership and ability to relate to players. If the Steelers are looking to inject some fresh perspective into the franchise while still holding onto their defensive roots, Weaver could be an intriguing option.

So far, Pittsburgh has kept its cards close to the vest. The team hasn’t officially confirmed its full list of interviews, but several names have surfaced through league sources. Among them: former Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula, Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, 49ers offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak, and Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter.

That’s a wide-ranging group, spanning veteran head coaches, young coordinators, offensive minds, and defensive stalwarts. It shows that the Steelers are casting a wide net-and perhaps rethinking what the next era of Steelers football should look like.

But with second interviews now underway, the process is clearly entering a more serious phase. Flores and Weaver both bring strong cases to the table, and each represents a different path forward.

Flores offers familiarity, proven success, and a hard-nosed defensive identity. Weaver brings fresh energy, a player’s perspective, and a modern approach to coaching.

The Steelers are at a crossroads. The next head coach won’t just be following a legend-they’ll be tasked with restoring Pittsburgh to contender status in a fiercely competitive AFC. Whoever gets the nod will need to blend tradition with innovation, toughness with adaptability.

And based on who’s getting second looks, the Steelers are doing their homework.
