The Steelers’ standoff with Joey Porter Jr. appears to be heading toward an ugly finish, and Thursday only sharpened that picture.
Pittsburgh had been hopeful earlier in the day that Porter would be on the field in pads with his teammates. Instead, after taking part in one loose-ball drill, the cornerback left practice with a trainer. His injury label had already changed by then: Porter was no longer listed with a back injury, but he was now tagged as “limited” with “NIR/Conditioning” (non-injury-related).
That sequence raised the obvious question about why he exited practice. The situation has clearly moved past a simple health issue and into something much messier.
One source familiar with the matter told ESPN’s Brooke Pryor and Jeremy Fowler, “I don't know if he ever puts on a Steelers uniform again,” which only added to the sense that this is getting harder to repair by the day.
The problem for Pittsburgh is that this has become a hardball situation with no sign of either side blinking. General manager Omar Khan would like Porter to commit to the team and accept the contract he was offered, but that outcome does not look close. Unless the Steelers abandon their usual approach of not negotiating during the season - or dramatically increase the guarantees in a new deal - there does not appear to be a path to resolution.
That is why a trade now looks like the cleanest escape hatch. Porter’s agent, Andre Odom, could ask for one at any moment, and once that happens, the Steelers would be in danger of losing leverage. If other teams believe Porter is trying to force his way out, his value could slip fast because Pittsburgh would be the club that has to move him.
The Steelers should be exploring the market before it gets to that point. A first-round pick may be too rich, but Porter could still bring back a second-rounder and additional compensation, especially from contenders that already have clear problems in the secondary this early in the season.
Detroit has already surfaced as one possible landing spot. Lions reporter Jeff Ridson said Detroit’s front office has already called Pittsburgh.
At this stage, the Steelers are staring at a choice between dragging this out and risking a Le’Veon Bell-style mess, or moving Porter now and salvaging something from a breakup that already feels close to inevitable.
