Steelers Linked to J.J. McCarthy Amid Vikings QB Shuffle Drama

Amid quarterback reshuffles, NFL analyst Daniel Jeremiah urges the Steelers to prioritize their current roster strength over experimenting with J.J. McCarthy.

The Minnesota Vikings are in the midst of a quarterback conundrum, with J.J. McCarthy's future hanging in the balance. The offseason saw the Vikings shake things up by signing Kyler Murray on a veteran minimum deal and re-signing Carson Wentz, setting up a competitive quarterback room.

Rumors are swirling around McCarthy possibly heading to the Pittsburgh Steelers via trade. The Steelers are in limbo, waiting on Aaron Rodgers' decision while keeping an eye on other options, including the draft, as they embark on the Mike McCarthy era.

On the “New Football America” podcast, Dave Dameshek discussed Pittsburgh's quarterback situation with NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah. When considering Rodgers, Kirk Cousins, and J.J. McCarthy, Jeremiah leaned toward Cousins as the safest bet.

Jeremiah noted, “With players like T.J. Watt and Cameron Heyward returning, this isn't the time to experiment with J.J.

McCarthy. It’s about making the most of a two-year window with a proven option like Cousins.”

The Steelers have built a solid foundation on both lines and boast a talented young roster. Jeremiah emphasized that the decision at quarterback feels pivotal for this group’s final push before transitioning to the next chapter.

Alec Lewis of The Athletic weighed in on McCarthy's potential trade candidacy, especially if he ends up third on Minnesota’s depth chart. Lewis pointed out that McCarthy's camp might be unsettled by the Murray signing, and the Vikings could entertain offers if the right deal comes along.

The Vikings have expressed confidence in McCarthy, emphasizing competition as a catalyst for growth. While not going all-in for 2026, they aim to reassert their dominance in the NFC North.

McCarthy, a 2024 first-round pick, has faced hurdles in Minnesota. Missing his rookie season and playing only 10 games in 2025, he threw for 1,632 yards and 11 touchdowns last year, as the Vikings fell short of the playoffs.
