Steelers Quarterback Conundrum: A Closer Look
The Pittsburgh Steelers are at a crossroads with their quarterback situation, and head coach Mike McCarthy appears to have his sights set on Aaron Rodgers. However, McCarthy is also eager to work with Will Howard, who is entering his second season but has yet to take a snap.
Another intriguing option on the table is Alabama's Ty Simpson. Many mock drafts have projected Simpson as the Steelers' pick at No. 21 in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk recently shared an interesting perspective on 93.7 The Fan, suggesting that the buzz around Howard, an Ohio State alum and sixth-round pick last year, might be a strategic smokescreen.
"If they're truly banking on Howard, they might be setting the stage for a surprise move," Florio speculated. "Positioning Howard as the future while eyeing Rodgers and potentially Simpson could be a clever play."
Historically, the Steelers aren't known for such tactics. They patiently waited for Kenny Pickett to fall to them in 2022, a move that didn't pan out as hoped. Florio cautions that selecting Simpson in a similar draft position might be risky.
"The real question is whether Simpson is truly a first-round talent," Florio noted. "In a weaker draft class, he might be, but in a stronger year, who knows?"
Meanwhile, Will Howard has become a fan favorite, as highlighted in a recent Vegas Insider study. Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger has voiced his support for Howard, despite the quarterback's rookie season being derailed by a broken pinky finger.
"I admire his passion and toughness," Roethlisberger said. "He's got the Pittsburgh spirit. While he might not become a top-10 all-time great, he has the potential to be among the league's best and lead us to Super Bowls."
As the Steelers navigate these options, the quarterback decision looms large, with the potential to shape the franchise's future.
