Ben Roethlisberger Suggests Mike Tomlin for Penn State Job-But the Steelers Coach Isn’t Budging From the NFL
On a recent episode of his Footbahlin podcast, former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger tossed out a curveball that raised more than a few eyebrows in Pittsburgh and beyond. While discussing the future of longtime Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, Roethlisberger floated the idea that Tomlin might be a perfect fit for the now-vacant head coaching job at Penn State.
“Maybe a fresh start for him is what’s best,” Roethlisberger said. “Whether that’s in the pros, maybe go be Penn State’s head coach.
You know what he would do in Penn State? He would probably go win national championships, because he’s a great recruiter.”
It’s certainly a bold take, especially considering Tomlin’s well-documented stance on coaching in the college ranks. And while Roethlisberger framed it as a compliment-highlighting Tomlin’s leadership and recruiting chops-the reaction inside NFL circles hasn’t been all that warm.
According to a source who spoke with CBS Sports insider Jonathan Jones, the comment didn’t sit well with those close to the Steelers organization. “Ben is more concerned about remaining relevant than being real and respectful,” the source said.
That’s a strong pushback-and it underscores just how firm Tomlin has been in his commitment to the NFL. This isn’t the first time his name has been linked to a high-profile college job.
Back in 2021, when the USC and LSU head coaching spots were open, Tomlin was floated as a potential candidate. His response at the time?
Blunt, definitive, and vintage Tomlin.
“Hey guys, I don’t have time for that speculation. I mean, that’s a joke to me,” Tomlin said.
“I got one of the best jobs in all of professional sport. Why would I have any interest in coaching college football?
And that will be the last time I will address it. Not only today, but moving forward.
Never say never. But never.
OK? There’s not a booster with a big enough check.”
He even called out the double standard in the rumor mill: “Anybody asking Sean Payton about that? Anybody asking Andy Reid about stuff like that?”
The message was crystal clear then, and nothing has changed since. Tomlin is an NFL guy through and through.
He’s built a reputation as one of the league’s most consistent head coaches, with a Super Bowl ring and a streak of never having a losing season. His name might pop up in college rumors, but he’s made it clear that if he ever leaves Pittsburgh, it’ll be for another NFL sideline-not a college campus.
So while Roethlisberger’s comments might have stirred up conversation, don’t expect Tomlin to be walking the sidelines in Happy Valley anytime soon. The Steelers’ head coach remains focused on the NFL grind-just as he always has.
