Steelers Just Raised The Stakes On Their Fast Start

With a winning streak and focus beyond the noise, the Steelers are setting their sights on the Super Bowl.

PITTSBURGH -- The Steelers walked into their bye week at 6-2, fresh off a win over a Cleveland Browns team that arrived with plenty of noise and left without backing it up. The result gave Pittsburgh four straight victories and left this group feeling exactly where it wants to be: first in the division and looking like more than a team just trying to hang around.

The postgame mood inside the locker room wasn’t about settling scores or chasing down every bit of trash talk. Jaquan Brisker made that clear when he was asked about Jared Verse’s comments before the game.

"He should have kept his mouth shut," Jaquan Brisker said after the game about Jared Verse's trash talk. "All that talk, and then to come out with zero tackles, that’s bad."

That was about as sharp as Pittsburgh got in response. Verse had said the Browns would "own" Pittsburgh in this game, but the Steelers didn’t spend much time dwelling on it. Jaylen Warren summed up the approach with a short line that fit the tone of the day.

"Some talk, some walk," Jaylen Warren summed it up.

What seemed to bother Pittsburgh more than the chatter was Cleveland choosing to receive the opening kickoff. Beyond that, the Steelers were locked on the broader mission: keep the win streak rolling, get the defense humming, and sort out the offensive line before the season reaches its middle stretch.

"We're 6-2 going into the bye, first in the division. We're right where we want to be," Aaron Rodgers said after the game.

That’s the part that matters most to this team. For years, the Steelers have had stretches that hinted at something bigger, only to fall short when the postseason arrived.

This group sounds different. The goal isn’t simply to make the playoffs and call it a success.

They want to be in the conversation for something much bigger.

"We didn't discuss it one second, what they were saying about us," T.J. Watt said about the Browns.

"We just want to go about business. We have a lot of mature guys who have done it here and done it other places and had a lot of success and a lot of young guys who want to continue to grow and be great.

We're just focused about what's in the building right now."

The numbers back up the feeling around the team. Pittsburgh’s defense is in the top 10 in points allowed and takeaways.

The offense has topped 20 points in all but one game. And with the Bengals coming after the bye, the Steelers have a chance to add to their division lead.

That’s the bigger picture in Pittsburgh now. Not the noise.

Not the quotes. Not the postgame back-and-forth.

Just a team that believes it has the look of a contender.

"We were motivated because we wanted to get this damn win before we got to the bye," Heyward put it,"so..."

Steelers Have One Big Rivalry Streak To Defend This Week

The Steelers come home from Paris with a familiar kind of edge to defend, and this one has been built over years rather than weeks. No matter how much the roster or coaching staff has changed on either side, Pittsburgh has continued to make life difficult for Cleveland in regular-season games at home, turning Acrisure Stadium into one of the Browns' toughest stops on the schedule.

There is still no guarantee of a clean, comfortable outcome in Week 8, especially with the Steelers adjusting to the demands of the trip back from France. Even so, the matchup carries the same old weight for Pittsburgh, which has protected this particular piece of turf for a long time and has another chance to keep that run going against a division rival that has not been able to break through here in years. Steelers Defense Must Set The Tone In A Huge AFC North Test

The next AFC North test brings the kind of familiar tension Pittsburgh has to embrace if it wants to control the game early. Against Cleveland, the Steelers defense is being asked to do more than just hold its ground, with the spotlight on creating an uncomfortable afternoon for Deshaun Watson and setting the tone before the Browns can settle in.

For Pittsburgh, the formula is clear even if the execution is not. Winning the turnover battle and turning pressure into mistakes will go a long way toward deciding whether this matchup stays on the Steelers terms, and the defense will need to be disruptive from the start to make that happen. Steelers Hit Bye Week In First Place With One Clear Concern

The Steelers went into their bye week with a 27-6 win over Cleveland, a 6-2 record and first place in the AFC North at the seasons midpoint. It was the kind of result that reinforces what Pittsburgh has built so far under Aaron Rodgers and T.J. Watt: a team that can find different paths to a win and keep itself in position in a tight division race.

Still, the comfort level is not complete. Rodgers pointed to the offenses uneven showing after the Browns game, even in a victory that widened the gap in the standings, and the Steelers know the schedule does not get any softer coming out of the break. Cincinnati is next, and with key divisional matchups still ahead, Pittsburghs margin for error will stay slim if the offense cannot become more consistent. [Read more 🡒]
