The Steelers have one big contract decision hanging over them as training camp approaches, and they may be keeping a close eye on New England while it plays out.
Pittsburgh wants to lock up Joey Porter Jr. on a long-term extension that would keep him in black and gold for four more years and pay him like one of the NFL’s top cornerbacks. Porter Jr., according to reporting, has been aiming even higher - a deal that would make him the top-paid player at his position. With talks at a standstill, the Steelers could use some help from another cornerback negotiation elsewhere in the league.
That’s where the Patriots come in. New England has been working on a new deal for Christian Gonzalez, and Patriots owner Robert Kraft recently told reporters the team made an offer that would make Gonzalez the highest-paid corner in the NFL. If that deal gets done, it could help set the market in a way that benefits Pittsburgh’s side of the table.
The Steelers are not walking into this with a bargain in mind. Even if they come out ahead in the negotiation, Porter Jr. is still in line for a deal worth at least $25 million per season, with more than $40 million guaranteed. That’s the floor, not the dream scenario.
A Gonzalez extension would matter because it would push the top of the market into clearer view. The source of that ceiling already includes Trent McDuffie, who makes $31 million per season with the Los Angeles Rams, and Devon Witherspoon, whose extension with the Seattle Seahawks is expected soon. If Gonzalez lands at the top, Pittsburgh can point to those deals and argue there’s no reason to go all the way to $30 million per year for Porter Jr.
That doesn’t make the price tag small. It just gives the Steelers more leverage to say where they won’t go.
Porter Jr. is the real winner in this standoff. He could have taken a deal earlier in the summer, one that would have brought in solid money and guaranteed security.
Instead, he’s now staring at a much richer market. At minimum, he’s looking at top-10 cornerback money.
At the high end, he could land just behind Gonzalez and McDuffie and move into the top five.
Either way, the hometown discount is gone. Porter Jr. is positioned to cash in, and the Steelers are hoping the Patriots help make that happen by getting Gonzalez’s extension across the finish line.
