The next cornerback market reset could arrive just as the Steelers are trying to lock down one of their own.
New England owner Robert Kraft said the Patriots have put a contract offer in front of Christian Gonzalez that would make him the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback.
“Coincidentally, it’s the highest contract in the Patriots franchise history,” Kraft said, via Mike Reiss.
If Gonzalez signs on those terms, the ripple effect could hit Pittsburgh fast. The Steelers are working toward a long-term extension for Joey Porter Jr., and a new benchmark at the position would only make that negotiation more expensive.
That matters because Gonzalez and Porter came into the league together in the 2023 NFL Draft. Pittsburgh had a shot at Gonzalez with the 14th overall pick, but after trading up three spots with the Patriots, the Steelers took offensive tackle Broderick Jones instead.
New England stayed put and grabbed Gonzalez at No. 17, while Pittsburgh later addressed cornerback by taking Porter at No. 32.
Since then, both players have lived up to the billing. Gonzalez has become widely regarded as one of the league’s top shutdown corners. Porter has grown into Pittsburgh’s No. 1 cornerback, leaning on his size, physicality, and press coverage to handle top receivers.
That shared draft class is why the comparison feels unavoidable now. Both are eligible for second contracts, and if Gonzalez lands a deal that resets the market, Porter’s side will have a clean, obvious comp to point to.
The Steelers have shown they’re willing to pay to keep their core together, with extensions for T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, and Nick Herbig.
Porter looks like the next name in line. If Gonzalez’s deal becomes official, though, the price tag for doing business at cornerback could climb again.
