The Pittsburgh Steelers have been busy this offseason, making strategic moves to strengthen their roster. However, the quarterback position remains a big question mark.
Fans have grown used to this uncertainty, especially with the ongoing wait for Aaron Rodgers' decision. Last year, Rodgers kept everyone on edge until June, and it seems like history might repeat itself as the four-time MVP considers retirement.
Meanwhile, the Steelers are likely exploring their options in the 2026 NFL Draft.
In recent years, Pittsburgh has leaned towards veteran quarterbacks rather than gambling on rookies. This win-now approach hasn't quite panned out.
If Rodgers does retire, another veteran could be in the mix: Kirk Cousins. Recently released by the Atlanta Falcons, Cousins is eager to continue playing.
NFL insider Tom Pelissero mentioned on The Rich Eisen Show that the Steelers had previously shown interest in Cousins.
Pelissero noted, "Kirk Cousins is the one, and I know that they called on him last year." The Falcons weren't open to trade talks then, but now Cousins is a free agent. This opens the door for Pittsburgh if they decide to move on from Rodgers.
Last offseason, the Steelers reportedly reached out to the Falcons about Cousins while waiting for Rodgers' decision. Cousins had been benched at the end of the 2025 season in favor of rookie Michael Penix Jr. However, when Penix suffered a knee injury, Cousins stepped up, finishing the season strong with a 5-3 record, over 1,700 passing yards, and 10 touchdowns.
Despite a shaky 2024, where Cousins struggled post-Achilles injury, he proved that with time, he could still perform at a high level.
If Rodgers retires, the Steelers might consider starting Will Howard. Yet, pursuing Cousins could be a smart move, given his availability.
The challenge? Other teams, like the Arizona Cardinals, might also be eyeing Cousins, adding competition to the mix.
The Steelers' interest in Cousins highlights their proactive approach to securing a solid quarterback. As the offseason unfolds, Pittsburgh's strategy at this pivotal position will be one to watch.
