Steelers Hire Former Cowboys Coach for Key Offensive Role

The Steelers add a seasoned voice to their coaching staff with the hire of a well-traveled wide receivers coach known for developing elite talent.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are making moves to reshape their coaching staff, and one of the latest additions brings a wealth of experience to the wide receivers room. Adam Henry, a well-traveled and respected position coach, is expected to take over as the Steelers’ new wide receivers coach.

Henry most recently served in the same role with the Buffalo Bills from 2023 through the end of this past season. But with the Bills undergoing a coaching overhaul under newly appointed head coach Joe Brady, Henry won’t be returning to Buffalo. That opened the door for Pittsburgh to bring in a seasoned coach with a strong track record of developing talent.

If Henry’s name rings a bell, it should. He’s been around both the college and pro circuits, and his résumé includes some high-profile stops.

One of his most notable stretches came at LSU, where he coached a pair of future NFL stars-Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry. That stint helped catapult him into the NFL coaching ranks, where he’s since logged time with the 49ers, Browns, Giants, and Cowboys.

During his time with the Cowboys in 2020 and 2021, Henry worked under Mike McCarthy-now the Steelers’ offensive coordinator. That previous connection likely played a role in this hire, as McCarthy continues to shape his offensive staff in Pittsburgh. After his time in Dallas, Henry briefly stepped into the college game again, serving as offensive coordinator at Indiana for one season before returning to the NFL with Buffalo.

At 53, Henry brings not just experience but perspective. A former wide receiver himself at McNeese State, Henry went undrafted in 1994 but stayed close to the game, carving out a coaching career that’s spanned multiple decades and levels. He’s known for his ability to connect with players and help refine their route running, timing, and overall approach to the position.

In Pittsburgh, Henry steps into a wide receivers room that’s looking for a fresh voice. Zach Azzanni, who held the role last season, is not expected to return under the new regime. That opens the door for Henry to work with a promising group of pass-catchers and help elevate their game within McCarthy’s offensive system.

The Steelers have already begun reshaping their staff, retaining a handful of assistants and reportedly closing in on hiring Patrick Graham as defensive coordinator. Bringing in Henry is another step in that process-a move that adds experience, continuity with McCarthy, and a coach who’s worked with some of the best to ever do it at the wide receiver position.

For a Steelers team aiming to take the next step, especially on offense, Henry’s arrival could be a quietly important piece of the puzzle.
