Steelers Have An Obvious WR Need Aaron Rodgers Would Feel Fast

Could Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Josh Downs be the answer to bolstering the Steelers' passing game as the trade deadline looms?

With the NFL Trade Deadline closing in, the Steelers are looking more like buyers than bargain hunters. A 5-2 start and a share of the AFC North lead will do that. But the roster still has holes, and the one at wide receiver is hard to ignore.

That’s where Omar Khan’s attention should go. Pittsburgh needs help on offense, and no spot carries more weight than receiver, especially with Aaron Rodgers needing more reliable options to get the passing game moving and reach the level head coach Mike McCarthy had in mind.

The fit that stands out is Josh Downs.

Indianapolis looks ready to keep dealing after moving offensive guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks for a third-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft and a 2028 fifth-round draft choice. That move made the Colts’ direction plain enough: they’re collecting picks and leaning into a rebuild. For a team in Pittsburgh’s position, that creates an opening.

Downs would bring a specific skill set the Steelers don’t currently have enough of. DK Metcalf and Germie Bernard have their strengths, but the offense has struggled to create separation. That’s been a problem both underneath and downfield, and it’s forced Rodgers into a tough job of threading throws with perfect placement.

Downs changes that equation because he can get free quickly off the line of scrimmage. The 25-year-old has gone over 550 receiving yards in each of his first three NFL seasons, and his work from the slot is what makes him especially attractive for Pittsburgh. He’d give the Steelers a target in the middle of the field and some lineup flexibility, allowing Bernard to move around the line of scrimmage while also opening a path for Roman Wilson on the outside once he returns from Injured Reserve.

Speed is another major part of the appeal. The reports on his ceiling may vary, but his quickness doesn’t. Pittsburgh would benefit from adding that burst to the offense, and this might be the moment the team is willing to spend draft capital to do it.

After the Nelson trade, the message from Indianapolis was loud and clear. The Colts are willing to move talent for picks, and that means they may not ask for an inflated return if another team comes calling about one of their receivers.

Downs is now the top wide receiver available, and he’s not happy with the Colts. He’s not a superstar, but he has produced, and with a bigger role in Pittsburgh, he could help give Rodgers a receiver group he can trust. As the deadline nears, the Steelers should be on the phone.

Yahya Black Is Giving Steelers Fans Another Reason To Trust This Defense

Yahya Black has quietly become one of the more interesting developments on Pittsburghs defense this season. With Derrick Harmon sidelined, Blacks role has grown, and while the box score and grading metrics may not fully capture it, the tape shows a lineman doing the dirty work that helps the Steelers run defense hold up. He has been clogging lanes, taking on double teams and making life harder for backs trying to find clean space inside.

There is also a little more to his game than just eating blocks, which matters for a defense that wants dependable pieces it can keep on the field. Black has started to show improvement as a pass rusher, giving Pittsburgh a more versatile presence up front and making him increasingly playable in more situations. For a team that leans on its defense to set the tone, that kind of growth is another reason to trust what this unit can still be. [Read more 🡒]

Steelers Have A Trade Deadline Question Fans Will Fight Over

With the NFL trade deadline drawing closer, the Steelers are in the familiar position of weighing whether a midseason move could help a roster that still has obvious edges to smooth out. Pittsburgh has about $14.5 million in salary cap space, enough to at least take a serious look at the market if the right deal appears, and the early chatter is already pointing in several directions depending on which part of the roster the front office believes needs the most help.

The names being floated span the board, from cornerback Tariq Woolen and wideout Jauan Jennings to linebacker Frankie Luvu, guard Quenton Nelson and safety Jessie Bates III, which tells you how many different conversations could be happening at once. The bigger question is not just who is available, but whether Pittsburgh wants a short-term fix in a rental type of move or prefers to keep its powder dry and trust what it has, a choice that usually gets fans arguing long before the deadline actually arrives. Joey Porter Jr Is Reopening An Uncomfortable Steelers Debate

Joey Porter Jr. has become a reminder of what the Steelers used to have at cornerback, and the contrast has been hard to ignore. Now with Dallas, Porter has been sharp in coverage this season, while Pittsburghs secondary looked vulnerable again in its Week 7 game against New Orleans, giving up a string of completions and too many easy yards in the back end.

The comparison is uncomfortable because it goes beyond a single rough afternoon. Porter has been doing his part for the Cowboys, while the Steelers are left sorting through another week where their defensive backs did not hold up the way they needed to, and that only sharpens the old question about how Pittsburgh evaluated and moved on from the young corner.
